i have a ruger 10/22 with a scope and a few 30 round mags and one ar 15. i "sold" the 22 to my grandpa to pay my rent for a month while i was looking for a job (and i found one). after i get out of debt (~$700) i was planning on getting another ar for backup, in case a part were to break on my first one and i didnt have access to replacement parts while in a survival situation.
my question is, do i really need a 10/22 or should i sell it and put the money towards the other ar and get a 22 conversion for it? or should i "buy it back" from my grandpa and hold onto it?

Everyone says everyone should own a .22.

Personally, I don't own one, and really don't intend to buy one any time soon.  I get by just fine with the .223, 5.45, and 30-06.

If you want one, buy it.  Really only you can decide.

Yup, you are the only one who can really say whether you need one or not. I have a few 22lr's, 2 rifles and 2 pistols. Decide what a "survival situation" is to you, then work from there. Decide what types of obsticals you could come across. If you are stranded in the woods in a bug out situation, 22 would be great for small game.

I have lots of guns, but I have lots of family....that might not be the right approach for you.

I personally cant imagine not having a 10/22 or 4
If you're on a budget a 22 is a great way to practice marksmanship if nothing else....

Just my opinion and don't take it personal  but unless your grandpa wants the 22 it's you responsibility to buy it back from him ...... family that is good enough to help you is worth more than whatever the amount of money he loaned you.

im paying him back either way, if i do sell the 22 itll be to someone else and ill give my grandpa the money.
would a 22 conversion for an ar be good enough to replace the 10/22? are they reliable and all?

I have two 10/22 rifles at the present and consider them as an important part of my survival cache. The AR conversions seem to work, but most people use them for inexpensive practice. In a PAW situation, I would want my AR up and running with .223 ammo for defensive situations. The .22's will be used for less threatening and quieter situations. For the cost of the conversion, you should be able to get your rifle back or a used one. Then you have two guns if one should break down.

Step one is buy it back.

I personally would sell it and go for a 22lr ar upper first.

You should get a reasonably accurate one setup to immitate your ar setup in 223.

a 10/22 can be made to be seriously accurate and that is all good and fine but it depends on your needs.

When I lived in the country an accurate 22lr setup was great for varmint problems.

These days I am not in the country and I am more interested in something for practicing my skills for self defense without using up expensive ammo.

Eventually both will be your answer to some extent.  I personally would build a 22lr upper to imitate your current 223 setup and later on if you want serious 22lr accuracy see about setting up a 22lr ar upper for serious accuracy.

I do not like the 22lr uppers that use a 223 barrel.  From what reading I have done you want a dedicated 22lr barrel so that shoul get you reasonable accuracy in my opinion.

However, I no longer own an ar so maybe I have been out of the loop for a bit.

whats the difference between a 223 and a 22lr barrel? is it just the twist?

I think the chamber may be different also.

For best accuracy you should plan on purchasing a dedicated 22lr upper.
You can go with a 22 LR conversion kit for the AR if you want,  However if money is a problem I think you should buy back the 10/22.  It will be cheaper than the conversion or the dedicated upper, and with the cost of 22 LRr compared to 5.56/223 you are likely to practice more.

I always believe in having a 22. The main thing right now is that it is the cheapest round to shoot and keep your skills up. What other caliper can you purchase 500rds for under $15? Get the 22 back or get another.

I would either buy it back or get another. In my opinion everyone should have a .22lr.
It may very well be the ultimate "survival" meat getter. Anyway, that's my .02 cents worth.
