OK guys here is the question: My pack is a condor with outside pouches attached (fak, flashlight, compass, utility, etc) I hate having all this gear attached to the outside, yes they are all malice attached. What do you do? Pack everything internally? Just live with the attached pouches? Suggestions? This is my GHB so just three days of gear. When I was in the military we used the alice packs and packed everything inside or in the three external pockets, but I hate the alice pack. Any help appreciated. |

If you don't like all the gear on the outside, then why did you get that pack? I don't like having everything in a single pocket. Just makes it difficult to find what you need, when you need it. I never liked the medium Alice so purchased my own large. Replace the shoulder straps and belt and its a reliable ruck. Two 2-qts and a first aid kit attached and strapped down to the outside. The smaller pockets had WCK, socks, hygiene kit (chunk of soap, 1/2 tooth brush, mini tube of toothpaste). Larger pockets one days worth of food, TP, ww top, and then mission specific gear. I also added some fastex(sp) buckles to it and a small 'assault' type pack so I could attach it to the top of the ruck. NVGs, spare ammo, bats, etc in this. There are a number of companies that are doing mods to the medium to add on webbing for MOLLE pouches. I have seen the Tactical Tailor mods and they are well made. The issue mountain ruck is too tall. Works great for camping, but tactical field use its just not practical. Same thing can be said for the new MOLLE ruck. I have seen a number of the aftermarket extended packs, TT, Kirafu(sp), BlackHawk, etc. and they are well made. You need to decide on the style you like and then find a store that carries them. I consider rucks very similar to footwear. if it doesn't fit properly you will hate it. and the only way to determine fit is to try it on. You need to go in and load them up with weight and walk around in them. Make sure to bring in your LBE/LBV also. need to make sure it works with everything else. A couple 30# weight lifting discs are good for the load. The problem is finding a place near you that carries the rucks. |
I've seen a Condor before and it should be capable of holding 3 days worth of gear internally. Keep your most used items in the upper and lower front pouches (FAK, water filter ect.) and heavier items such as food and extra ammo(if you carry some) in the main compartment. Take a look at what your carrying and try to trim it down to the bare essential for 3 days. Once you do that and get it packed in the bag, then you can add extra comfort items if theres room. |

The Condor packs should hold plenty of stuff inside w/o having to resort to outside pouches. But, the outside MOLLE straps work good for extra mags and first aid pouches that you would not normally pack internally. Also, radio's and other equipment you need fast access to w/o using the zipper. Maybe think about mounting your knife, if you have a molle sheath for it, on the outside. |
