I did not see any crows, but saw some wild turkeys in vicinity of my cornfield.  Next day, the little corn plants were pulled up and left to wither in the sun.  I will put a scarecrow in, but again, didn't see any crows do didn't worry...anyone else have this problem?

I caught the crows doing the same thing to my corn, Killed two of them and hung them in the field, no more problems.

Could be coons. They reak havoc on our corn if we don't take the measures to keep them out or thin them out
a little.

Yep, turkeys, geese and crows will all pull and eat  the young corn shoots.

Boy, I can't describe how depressed this has made me...I had no idea this could bring a man down so much...

just trying to figure out how to replant...I borrowed a mechanical planter and I wont' have access to it again...I'm working long hours and don't know when I can get out there with a hoe and start again by hand...

no, none at all...the soil wasn't moist enough to register something as light as a crow, and I didn't see turkey tracks either.

Wow.

Freeze in TN.

Corn in TN.

Just curious, why not tobacco?

From a small town in Ohio, I know down near the OH river and south it changes from corn & soybeans to more tobacco. Or is there just no profit in tobacco anymore?

Sounds like some kind of bird did it.  They pull the young plant and eat the seed kernel that is still attached to the shoot.

Yes CavVet we had a freeze here during the Easter holiday. Plenty of corn, soybeans, and other row crops are grown here.  Tobacco is not very common around this part of Tn.

Fordguy:

someone has mentioned this already:  Shoot some crows, and string em up.  Gruesome but it works...  I've done this many a time in the apple orchard.  Doesn't work worth a damn on 'dumb' birds though.  I shot  about a dozen cowbirds and grackles a few days ago, and it didn't bother the live ones a bit.

Slightly off topic:  I have a problem with deer and mature corn.   I strung a couple strands of electic wire, placed a small sheet metal "tent" (just a 6" by 6" square folded ) over the wire with a bit of duct tape under, and a gob of peanut butter.  Damn deer take a shot in the nose and/or tongue and leave in a hurry.  Works good.

OK, for an update, I put up a scarecrow, stuffed with straw and all, in some brand new overalls (we do things right in the fordguy house...haha.)  and the corn is 4 feet high now.  Things are looking good.  Thanks to all for the help - now if I could only find a JD 71 planter for next year...

it's tall enough for the racoons and deer to ride it down now.

Where there's turkeys, there's also deer!  It must be some sort of a union thing, but during deer season I see turkey and during turkey season I see deer!
