I am considering adding security film to all my downstairs windows and glass doors.  1) to prevent B&E through window glass, and 2)prevent any storm damage or accidental personal damage due to glass breakage.  I have seen lots of video on this stuff and it is impressive.  Have any of you all here tried this stuff on your homes?

I had 3m's film put on all the windows in my house, for hurricane, burglar, but the best is the energy savings. I am currently saving at least 20% on my A/C bill if not more, plus the hot spots in front of the windows are gone.  With the light tint it makes it very hard to see into the house during the day, might be a deterrent for burglary kinda like closed curtains, but I can still see out.  Definitely not cheap but well worth the cost in the long run.

I only recently heard of this stuff.  It seems like a great idea.

Is this a DIY project or is a pro needed?

As a former window tinter, I advise you to get a pro to install it. If you don't you will almost certainly ruin expensive film.

I have installed lots of film on car windows which I think would be alot harder.  This stuff is like 8ml thick.  Some places sell a DIY kit and video instructions.  I just wanted to get some feedback on its actual usefulness and clarity/energy savings.

There was another thread about this stuff a few weeks ago that had first hand accounts.  Search is your friend.

Guestimate on what you paid / number of windows? Been thinking of this myself.

Paid about $3500 for 15 medium to large windows and 5 sets of french doors if I remeber right is was $15 to $20 per sq/ft depending on amount of heat reflectivity.  I got the second to top of the line it is about a 20% tint3M Night vision Window tint, in the 6 months I've had it on my windows I would say its saved about $300 in A/C bills and its not even summer.  My upstairs A/C always ran now it seems like I never hear it running.

I also feel much more secure, knowing that it will at least take a good effort to get through my windows and door, not just a quick rock through the window

i was under the impression that you couldn't just install it but that the whole pane of glass had to be insdie the frame otherwise the glass would just pop out but not shatter into pieces. thus just making the glass safer when it broke. does this stuff not let one actually gain enterance through a window or just protect the glass?

The other thread that I mentioned in my earlier post included a link to a story from a board member who installed it in his store.  It doesn't prevent theives from getting in but it slows them down.  If you hit the glass with a blunt object then the glass will shatter but all be held in place.  If you use something pointed or sharp (such as an axe) that focuses the energy into a smaller area then you can chop through it with effort.
