My wife and I will be planting some in the spring and we're still reviewing our game plan. these trees were purchased from hartmans nursery in puyalup wa, he specializes in resistant varieties for our climate. those apple came from six 6-7 year old trees wynooche, sweet16, keepsake, spartan, chehalis, all selected for there good keeping qualities. the trees are on dwarf or semi dwarf root stock, I won't tell you which because your condition will probably call for a different type, here is a primerhttp://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/00-007.htm I also have 1 wiliams pride which is a great early apple but does not keep well. I picked them all because it was going to rain soon and we had not had rain for 80 days, if I did not pick them they would have split. about half of them had defects that made them unsuitable for storage they were turned into cider. the potatoes came out of a 24x8 patch, I planted yellow fin, russet Burbank, and an unknown white variety, the fins did the best, all were saved from last year. I know most experts recommend new seed every year, but that is not sustainable. as far as storing potatoes, I need to find a better place to keep them, the water table is to high for a root cellar. last year I stored them in bins outside in the shade and covered, they fins lasted until march, I then planted what remained, with better storage I might stretch that to may. apples require the same storage conditions, but I need to keep them separate from the potatoes as potatoes ripen and rot apple due to acetylene gas |
|
|
I also have some trees on %80 root stock because when I planted them I wanted them to grow tall enough that the deer and bear could not eat them all.
I have since enclosed the orchard with 5' dog proof wire and run chickens in it to eat bugs and fertilize the soil.(they also eat the wind fall) and get eggs |

Seeing the picture above makes me think.
I built a couple of these last year. They don't give me a hundred pounds each, but probably 40-50 pounds. Potato Boxes in 4 square feet |

How do you like the Shelf reliance racks? I have been thinking about getting one myself. Did you get yours direct from Shelf reliance or through another outlet? And I agree on the tin-foil statement. What little bit of food we are able to store away is small potatoes to the DHS, FEMA, etc. |

What little bit of food we are able to store away is small potatoes to the DHS, FEMA, etc. We ordered online through a Shelf Reliance consultant/host/distributor. Like them a lot, they are super adjustable to fit any LENGTH can, and there are 3 sizes of track for can circumference.. small, medium and large. Larges are for #10's.. I didn't get any of those. I had a couple extra "mediums" and had to order a few extra smalls, for my particular can population.. These are both "Harvest 72's" ordered with 5 small and 1 medium track sets. |

Wow...lots of awesome info in this thread. It just shows me that I have a long way to go in my prepping. I tend to keep several cases of water on hand and enough non-perishable food to last at least a couple of weeks. I am going to start using the $10 rule every time I go grocery shopping, though. Now, all I need to do I clean out the garage to make some more room.

I like the panel idea. Are the panels removable? Yes, the panels are removable once I take out four decking screws. I use a wheel barrel through the gates when I add compost, but I could drive my tractor through if I remove a panel. I was given the cedar 4x6 posts and my wife and I sat down in front of the computer trying to figure out a design. We finally decided on the above design and if I remember correctly the style is called a vault fence. The fence panels are made from ripped down spruce 2x10's. I thought about using cedar, but I wanted to use the shavings in the chicken coop and I've read that cedar shavings in a coop is a bad idea. Anyway, I ripped down about 8 2x10's if I remember correctly and planed them smooth before nailing everything together. I didn't put anything on the spruce and now everything looks the same gray. I figure I should get at least 10-15 years out of the fence before I need to redo the panels. We have plenty of deer around here and so far they haven't touched the garden. If they do decide to jump the fence I can extend it up fairly easily using steel posts and wire. I looked for a more recent picture, but couldn't find one. Here's a photo of the fence taken 10 days prior to the above pic. |

Parasites - Soil-transmitted Helminths (STHs) Parasites Home Soil-transmitted helminths refer to the intestinal worms infecting humans that are transmitted through contaminated soil ("helminth" means parasitic worm): Ascaris lumbricoides (sometimes called just "Ascaris"), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), and hookworm (Anclostoma duodenale and Necator americanus). A large part of the world's population is infected with one or more of these soil-transmitted helminths: approximately 807-1,121 million with Ascaris approximately 604-795 million with whipworm approximately 576-740 million with hookworm Soil-transmitted helminth infection is found mainly in areas with warm and moist climates where sanitation and hygiene are poor, including in temperate zones during warmer months. These STHs are considered Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) because they inflict tremendous disability and suffering yet can be controlled or eliminated. Soil-transmitted helminths live in the intestine and their eggs are passed in the feces of infected persons. If an infected person defecates outside (near bushes, in a garden, or field) or if the feces of an infected person are used as fertilizer, eggs are deposited on soil. Ascaris and hookworm eggs become infective as they mature in soil. People are infected with Ascaris and whipworm when eggs are ingested. This can happen when hands or fingers that have contaminated dirt on them are put in the mouth or by consuming vegetables and fruits that have not been carefully cooked, washed or peeled. Hookworm eggs are not infective. They hatch in soil, releasing larvae (immature worms) that mature into a form that can penetrate the skin of humans. Hookworm infection is transmitted primarily by walking barefoot on contaminated soil. One kind of hookworm (Anclostoma duodenale) can also be transmitted through the ingestion of larvae. People with light soil-transmitted helminth infections usually have no symptoms. Heavy infections can cause a range of health problems, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, blood and protein loss, rectal prolapse, and physical and cognitive growth retardation. Soil-transmitted helminth infections are treatable with medication prescribed by your health care provider. |
