I decided to go do a quick trip this morning to a spot that wasn’t too far away. I had set my alarm for 6 but with the rain pouring down, I decided to sleep in for a bit. I got underway at 8 and by 9 I was at the river.

The rain calmed down for a bit as I was getting my waders and boots on, I rigged up my rod and made my way down to the water. As the rain had slowed, I decided to take my camera with me. The river was nice and high for summer flows; I began working the bank as I waded upriver.

A short time later I spotted a nice sized fish feeding under some overhanging branches. I made a couple of casts to him before he decided to play. This guy did not want to be landed; he tried almost every trick except breaking the surface. Once he was close enough, I got him in the net and took a couple of quick shots.

Once I released him, I noticed a couple more fish feeding a little bit upriver. I worked my way to a good position and began to cast to them. Another nice male decided to take the fly and the fight was on. Like the first one, this guy was full of energy. As I netted him the hook popped out and he hopped out of the net on his own. As much as I wanted to get a pic of this guy as he had some really cool colors, I was glad that he was released so easily.

I decided to work this one rocky area in the middle of the river next. As I was working it a nice female took the fly. This fish fought well and made several good runs. As I was fighting her, the rain decided to return. By the time she was landed, it was pouring. I decided to get a couple of quick shots, well the shots turned out kind of crappy in my haste.

With the rain coming down hard I decided to take a break and go put the camera away. Once back at the car, I took a few scenery shots prior to putting it away.

At this point I decided to go check out another spot. As I drove up the road, I saw a truck in the turnout for that spot; oh well, time to go check out another run. The next run ended up not being very productive for me, at this point I decided to head back down and see if the other spot was open. As I rounded the corner, the same truck was there. With it raining really hard, I decided to just go back to the first run I fished.

Thankfully the spot was open upon my return. This time the camera stayed in the car as I didn’t feel like testing the amount of water it could get on it before it malfunctioned. Although, I do want a new DSLR body so maybe I should have taken it.

With the rain coming down hard I went back to work. The run was as productive as it was the first time I had fished it. Prior to calling it quits for the day I managed to pull four more out of it. I had some other things to take care of so at around 12:45 I decided to call it. I could have stayed a bit longer but in reality, I was completely soaked by that point in the day and I had caught plenty of nice sized fish.

Baetis emerger, and WD-40's did the trick mostly. I did manage a couple on an EHC during a very short caddis hatch.
