Caught me a reef donkey! Landed it on a star Rod Seagis 8-17lb Rod. Same Rod I use for redfish. Felt like an eternity!

Trolled up these mahi in 85 feet of shallow water! Ended the day with 3 mahi, 2 Cerro mackerel, a small kingfish, and an amberjack (greater). The AJ was super wormy so we have it to my neighbor for crab bait.

Caught and released some Graysby and a red grouper, then my wife's uncle caught and kept 2 porgy and a grunt. We were trolling home and picked up this Bonita. I'm going to collect some more and then rig them as swordfish bait.

Finally got back in the water. The fish forgot they should be hiding.

Brag pic.  My son won his school's inaugural inshore tournament ($500!!) with this lil' (17 1/2") Red near Caladesi (shrimp on a 1/0 under a cork).  Me and another Dad had a blast just being the Capt and Mate and having the kids fish all day.  They got a bunch of trout and some other small reds, no snook that day unfortunately.

With entry fees, gas, food, bait, (beer), etc it cost the Dads about $500 to make $500 but the kids split the winnings and felt like big-time champs.  Awesome day.

IIRC three or 4 of the hogs were mine, and one had some parasites so we didn't keep the meat. The triggerfish was shot by my buddy. It was his first time spearing so I pointed it out for him, then went to secure it on the spear shaft and it fucking bit me on the finger tip. So I put another spear through the bastard.

Nah, but I live in Summerland Key, 25 miles away from there. We had plenty of mayhem in our area this year. Overdue boats, dead diver, life jackets reported in the water, etc. It seemed like the word of the day was PON. As in,

"PON-PON, PON-PON, PON-PON..."

When ever my tug is heading to the gulf in the summer season we always hear pon-pons from CG sector Miami and KW. Its pretty much non stop.

The lobsters down there are much better than the Maine ones IMO. I love them.

A nice day at the CBBT, it was a little choppy though. We also caught some toadfish and some short sea bass. We also saw a seal snacking on a rather large striper.

After a couple month long hiatus, I finally got back on the water. My buddy came down from St Pete and we took another guy from work. We trolled up a Bonita on a planer with a tiny spoon, then anchored up and did some yellow tail/bottom fishing. We got 9 decent YT's (no flags) and caught a cero mack. Eventually we switched to a deeper spot and tried with no luck. We decided to troll the planer on the way out with a bigger PET spoon and got a nice king. It maxed out the 36" cooler. I'm going to be buying a few more planers and big spoons since the kings are coming to the Keys for the winter.

So we hit a couple spots yesterday. It was definitely wetsuit weather in the Keys. Water temp is in the low 70's so I wore my 3/2. I shot 3 of these, and missed a shot on a monster because I was using my small speargun. If I had my roller I could have launched the spear straight through it. Or I could have tried holding my breath longer and getting closer.

While I was cleaning my gear and having a shower beer, my wife made Panko crusted hogfish in the pan.  Doesn't get any fresher.

So we wrapped up a weekend of fishing with a good haul on Sunday. We got 4 lionfish, a monster spider crab, and I speared the biggest mangrove snapper I've ever seen, plus my first yellow jack. We were between 20 to 30 feet for most of it.

I'm on Summerland, and I'm just trying to make the most of this tour. Unfortunately it feels like we can never catch a break with the weather on the weekends. This past weekend was awesome though. Except Saturday. It was rough but we ran 20 miles offshore looking for the gulfstream and didn't catch a single fish. Today (Saturday) is beautiful and I'll be stuck at work chillin with my dog. Hopefully I can post some more pics in March.

Decided to try the bottom for some grouper in about 85ft.  Could not, for some reason get a keeper size grouper, lots of snapper though.  And probably about 30 stinking squirrel fish and lizard fish .   BUT my son did catch his first Lane Snapper.  Terrific eating.

Did you keep the Bonita? I've been freezing them for bait but just found out from the Google that if bled, iced, rinsed, and trimmed properly they're basically sushi/sashimi grade. I've been trashing some perfect meat. I still haven't tried it.

I like seeing the FL guys catch one around 18" or so and comment about how big it is! LOL! The last few weeks has seen a good run of blues in the 34-40" inch range. Too big to keep, but so fun! The ones I posted were caught in North Jersey, around Belmar. The D-Bay has been good for weakies of late.

How big are the weakies. I remember catching the tiderunners outside D-Bay back in the 80's.
Just sold the Old mans boat last month, as he had a stroke.

Went out tonight and got on some yellowtail snapper, some small grouper, and we managed to get my buddy hooked into a 6-7' nurse shark. The Daiwa sealine LD30II handled it no problem. This reel really impressed me tonight. I'm considering getting a LD20II on a standup rod for bottom fishing wrecks.
