Well I am spending two weeks starting next week hunting and knew that I will get a good buck with in 5 days. So I decided to get back into bow hunting. I got my old bow plucked from the back of the pickup about 4 years ago.
After a quick trip to the bow shop I walked out with a Matthews Z7 with a Spot Hogg on it. Wow have bows changed after sighting it in, my groupings are all in the kill zone out to 40 yards. Hope to post some new kills after the hunting trip. I do have a question about staking with bows, do you all use any scent removers if so which is yalls favorite? I use scent-a-way to wash my camo and the deodorant. I will i need more than that? |
| You should be fine. Just pay attention to the wind. All the scent killer in the world wont help if the wind swirls on you. That's what makes still hunting whitetails with a bow so enjoyable, rewarding, frustrating, exhausting..... any of those will do. I like to still hunt best on the backside of a storm front. With heavier winds and wet ground it makes it easy to sneak into bedding areas. Just move slow keep your eyes peeled! Good luck!! |

Late response i know but I saw your post about my Z7 asking if it was worth the hype. Forgot i posted that thing and just saw your response now. All i gotta say is i went in wanting a Bowtech Destroyer and the guy said here try this Z7. Needless to say i didnt think twice about getting the Z7. Took 3 deer with it already. I think its worth the hype Its been a month, still liking it? |

Late poster here but I am in the same boat. Will have the opportunity to get back into bow hunting seriously next year after a 10 year layover. I just started looking at new bows and am completely overwhelmed. I was seriously thinking of the Z7 but was warned that only Mathews accesories will fit it. Any truth to that?
I am also looking at Hoyt and Bowtech offerings. Everyone I talk to has their own opinions. These choices come from advertising during hunting TV shows nd conversations with few local bowhunters. I have until summer to decide - when I really have to get set up and practice. I have so many questions too. Whisker biscuit or fall away rest? I will be doing some still hunting so I like the idea of a whisker but they say that accuracy improves with a fall away. I used to shoot Rocky Mountain 3 blade heads over XX75 2217's off of an old Bear Whitetail II bow (man how that dates me.....). Was thinking about going to mechanicals. Rage 2 blade or G5's? Which carbon shafts? What fletching? I'm not opposed to paying for quality, but I want my $'s worth so I think I am looking to spend 1200 - 1400 bucks to get set up. Does this sound reasonable? Any discussion boards/forums to help my search? Thanks in advance!! |

You can get quite a set up for that kind of money.

I just started looking at new bows and am completely overwhelmed. I haven't shot a bow for 21 years (since I was 14). I'm saving up money to get a bow next spring, and I understand completely the feeling of being overwhelmed. Things changed a ton in those 21 years. I am also looking at Hoyt and Bowtech offerings. Everyone I talk to has their own opinions. These choices come from advertising during hunting TV shows nd conversations with few local bowhunters. I have until summer to decide - when I really have to get set up and practice. I have so many questions too. I am looking at two different bows: New Breed Archery Nemesis or a Maitland Retribution. Folks I've conversed with have traded in their Hoyts and Matthews and Bowtechs and PSEs and Martins to get these bows. They are smooth as can be, and still have great speed. My son's archery coach used to own an archery shop and goes through about 5-10 bows each year. He bought a New Breed Archery Cyborg, and he said that it will be sticking around for quite a while. He injured his arm 15 years ago and normally can't pull more than 60lbs, but with his Cyborg, he's pulling 67lbs easier than most bows at 60lbs. I'm looking at the Nemesis because reports show it to be the shiznizzle for folks with short draw lengths (mine is 26.5" - 27"). Whisker biscuit or fall away rest? I will be doing some still hunting so I like the idea of a whisker but they say that accuracy improves with a fall away. If you go with a containment rest like the WB, then look at the Octane Hostage rest. It doesn't warp the vanes like a WB can. Personally, I will be putting a drop-away rest on mine: either a Ripcord Code Red, or a QAD Ultra Hunter LD. I used to shoot Rocky Mountain 3 blade heads over XX75 2217's off of an old Bear Whitetail II bow (man how that dates me.....). Was thinking about going to mechanicals. Rage 2 blade or G5's? Which carbon shafts? What fletching? My bow was a Whitetail II also! Rage broadheads are in a hate or love position. Folks either swear by them or swear at them (often loudly). Which broadhead you get is more personal taste. I'm looking at Magnus Stingers, since they are made about an hour away from my home, and their replacement guarantee is great. Which carbon arrow you get will depend on the bow, the cam set-up, the draw length, and the draw weight.. As for fletching, standard offset 4" vanes are still popular. Blazer vanes are really popular. I'm considering something completely different: the FOB (Fletching Only Better), which will require a drop-away rest. I'm not opposed to paying for quality, but I want my $'s worth so I think I am looking to spend 1200 - 1400 bucks to get set up. Does this sound reasonable? Any discussion boards/forums to help my search? Thanks in advance!! $1200 will get you an awesome setup. I wish I had that kind of scratch to spend on my future bow setup. I will i need more than that? I use smoke. Scent Smoker is one thing some folks use (my son's archery coach swears by it), but I just hang my clothes in our small shed, get a small smoldering fire going in my small smoker and stick it in there for a short while before stuffing it immediately into a scent containment bag. And of course, I use every scent killing soap and deodorant, foot powder, etc. that I can. |

Loonybin thats for helping everyone out. You know alot more about bows than I do.
This year has been quite the success with a bow. I am able to hunt on some prime property and passed up 3 bucks that where over 150 B&C. We did get 4 does with ease and saving a tag for a good buck if I see one that is not too young. Over all I have had no problems with the bow. It is really quite, I shot a doe that died on the spot and it only startled the others and they didnt run. About scents. I did use a scent cover and spray on Sitka Optifade camo. Worked like a charm, but i did play the wind and had a stout 20 mph that I was down wind on. I shot with some guys carrying Hoyt and Bowtech as well as Matthews. Seems like they are all extremely good and get what you shoot the best was what I kept getting. |

I've figured out what I want in order to do what I want to do. This year has been quite the success with a bow. I am able to hunt on some prime property and passed up 3 bucks that where over 150 B&C. I don't think I've heard of too many people who have been unhappy with it. About scents. I did use a scent cover and spray on Sitka Optifade camo.
