That hurts. Every. Single. Time. It never gets easier and I'm pretty certain it get's harder. I remember my previous dog's last pheasant. He was feeling his 15 years and had a hard time bulling through the brush, but dammit, he was on a hot scent and he was going to find that bird no matter what. He flushed the rooster into the brilliant morning sunlight and it looked like the cover of a Field and Stream magazine. It was so beautiful I almost didn't shoot. But I did shoot because he never would have forgiven me it I had not shot that pheasant after all of his effort to hunt it. That was our last bird together. I'm sure you have similar memories of Addi. That dog will live as long as you live. |

Early goose has sucked ass, no wind and 80+ temps. Molt migrants don't care for the temp, just the time of year and we finally got into a couple of good shoots on a light north wind. A pair of double retrieves, Coop and Ellie got sent on the first one by mistake, but it made a good picture  . Then E working smarter, not harder.  |

| I was goose hunting with a buddy yesterday. He got his first band. It was from Wells, VT, banded in 2022. |

Glad you were still able to get out there! I missed last week of River Valley zone over here since my buddy's boat was buried in snow and none of the boat ramps were plowed out. I did get my pup out to New England Upland yesterday and shot some pheasants. He was a happy dog. |

| House pets earn their keep too! Just in different ways than duck dogs. Two of our best dogs were rescues that never hunted a day in their lives. |

Been quiet around here, Quinn should be going off to "boot camp" coming up soon, mostly to finish up her obedience, collar condition and throw in force fetch for good measure. Missed the first few days of turkey as we were on vacation in OBX and then it started to rain, and then rain some more. Birds all shut up for a week and then today the sun came out. Had 2 toms at 15', killed the one and the other had a hen directly behind him offering no shot. Ellie with her bird, Quinn is still trying to figure out WTF this thing is.  |

I inadvertently clicked on page one of this thread instead of "last post read". Glad I did. Lots of good times all those years ago! My nutty dog ruptured his Achilles tendon and needs a pricy surgery or he's retired. Even with the surgery he won't be able to go balls to the wall like he used to. I think I need to do the surgery AND get a new pup. The first posts in this thread convinced me so. |

Second split of duck season started Saturday, Quinn was on deck, and wouldn't you know it the first retrieve of the morning was a banded greenwing teal. The odds of that happening again are mindboggling, I should buy a powerball ticket. Edit to add, bird was banded as an adult in Feb of 25 in North Carolina |
