I am close to picking up my new bird dog, German Wirehaired Pointer Pup.

It has been a few years since my last dog and am looking for live birds for training, I can use pigeons, quail, pheasant etc.
Anyone know a good source for these ?

Well,

I would like to get a dozen live pigeons and maybee 6 quail and grouse to start my pup on. if the price is right i will buy live birds for all of her training. if not i will buy enough to get some hatched and raised up to flight age.
I want to give her plenty of live bird work. Not bird parts.

If you have any clubs close by sometimes they will sell you birds.

Or you can get your own.

I am going to order mine from Meyer Hatchery.

You could try calling McMurray but all I see on the website is quail and pheasant.

I was going to say trap free pigeons for the start. I like to go through about 30 pigeons and then move on to quail.

BTW - I have had the best luck catching pigeons using millet seeds for the bait. Most pet shops sell it for feeding pet birds.

Look up a local NAVHDA chapter.

They should have a training day near you, that you can attend.  Usually the first time is just to see if you're interested and there is no cost or obligation.  Mine sends a monthly invite, and you order birds through them, and they will have them on the training day for you.  Lots of friendly people that are willing to help out newcomers with their dogs.

Best of luck with your pup.
