My stepson has a very worn out Kelty Super Tioga that needs to be replaced. I need a suggestion for something with similar size capacity, of quality but affordable.

External frame or internal?  I am a huge Kelty fan so if he is looking for another external I would get whichever Kelty is currently comparable.  Maybe the Yukon?  Current Kelty production is really nice.  I have a Cache Hauler and its a great pack, but pretty big.  You can still find them online but they have been discontinued.

If he is looking for internal frame I recommend a Kelty Coyote.  Very comfortable and big enough for a ton of gear, but it can still "synch" down for smaller loads.  If your looking for something to be a combination day or overnight hiking pack that can work for a few days I would look at the Redwing.

I would guess that Hauler packs are probably not what your looking for but I did a comparison video on them not to long ago:

I've used rei branded packs for several years with great success, they usually have them in there clearance area of the web site for good prices... great quality for the ones I've had.

This. I would recommend going to the store and getting fitted and then looking online for clearance.
