Have a friend wtih 50 acres and sheep, chicken...etc. His adult daughter recently came face to face with one and it didnt back down. They are getting more bold and attacking his farm animals. He want me to kill them which is legal here. I have never hunted coyote but plan on placing some bait/food for them and waiting with my AR. Any recommendations? Calls? night time?

Good for you for "picking up the contract" but just out of curiosity, why can't he kill animals which have threatened his child? (on his own property)

If you want an electronic call, get a FoxPro, it'll make slaying them at night a no brainer.  Any kind of animal meat/guts/carcass would work as an effective bait as well (check local laws for the legality of baiting predators in your area).

Hunting them at night is likely to be much more effective than daylight, though it is not a chore to call them in during the day.  A suppressed AR and NODs sounds like a damn fun time.

ETA:  Also make sure you're using some type of expandable bullet.  A varmint bullet like a V-Max or Ballistic Tip is the bee's knees, but hollow points or soft points will work superbly.

I guess you haven't been paying attention to the news lately.  I mean, haven't you heard that AR's aren't used for hunting?!?

Build your own electronic call.

http://www.predatormastersforums.com/homemadeecaller.shtml

Replace the CD player with a cheap MP3 player, search the web for MP3 calls.

Can't say I know the laws in your state, but in Pennsylvania it is illegal to hunt with FMJ/non-expandable bullets.  May want to check on that for your locale..

Try fox pro calls and cass creek makes a good cheap call.

Some mouth calls work. Make a kissing sound to get them in closer. I have also had luck using a turkey box call work. Just make long drawn out yelps.

Also watch down wind. Yotes tend to circle down wind before coming in.

Make a decoy out of old faux fur cloth on a flexible rod. Stick in the ground at 75 yards, run a string to it and use the string to make it twitch. It will make the dog interested.

Good luck.

I'm in FL too and was wondering what the rules were for Coyotes. I'm moving to a hunting community that has a shotgun only policy within the areas set aside for hunting. Around the homes any firearm would be a no no but would a bow work? Can you get them close enough? We have deer, pigs, and turkey in the yard often. So I would think that the coyotes aren't too far off. If it were legal I could have gone inside the house, retrieved a rifle and had venison for dinner several times and that was in broad daylight! I think when it comes to coyotes and pigs the "rules" are a lot looser, just wondering.

first is safety.... I'll be doing it on 50 acres and will be using a backdrop of trees wo homes or people behind it
second ... its on private land owned by one person who has their animals attacked by coyotes. Its getting bad enough that the coyotes aren't affraid of people.
third ... it will be done at night w/ 3rd gen NV and a accurate 223 rifle

as far as legality is concerned ... what I'm doing is legal. I dont know if what youre going to do is legal or not

If you use a dead farm animal or road kill, stake and wire it to the ground.  They will try to drag it to cover if they can.  If you catch one eating on the bait wait to see if another comes in also.  If calling them in and you get a double shoot the back one first, the lead dog will swap ends and give a good butt shot.  Most importantly, if you kill one take it by the barn and leave it as calling card to the others.  Seeing one of their own dead and rotting gets them nervous and less brave.

my suggestion would be to get a live rabbit and tie its foot with paracord and hang it from a tree. Every coyote in 5 miles will come running. Be sure to check your laws for baiting.

Side note. Spent the night with my kids in Corbett over the weekend. Heard a pack of yotes in moving nearby. First time I've heard them. Small game season, not a lot of people in there now so I guess they were feeling gutsy enough to announce themselves.

Not sure about your are of the sunshine state. But here in Ohio, We use a turkey call. Yes, a turkey call. And my coyote gun is a Old Savage 12 ga. over and under with a 223 on the top. I use 55 gr Balistic tip bullets, And when we are hunting coyote, it's steel tripple BBB goose loads.

These yotes up here love a good turkey dinner. We started seeing more coyote during the turkey season (spring and fall). So we started using a turkey call on coyote hunts. And dam if it doesn't work. They will come slidding in looking for birds, And not looking for the hunter, And thats when i have my choice of 12 ga or 223. Either way, its dead dog.

Give it a shot.

Get some good camo. And pick up a good call. Always call into the wind, if you can't you need to mask your scent. I have had lots of dogs "wind" me. Take a old coffee can and fill it with cotton balls with some fox piss or really any lure or scent cover. Its worked for me.

Lots of options out there for calls. I have a few mouth calls, from sceery, lohman, and my latest is a M.A.D. mid range.

I like the dying rabbit calls, then maybe a vole squeak to coax them in when they are close.

I did just pick up a fox pro wildfire. I haven't got a chance to use it yet. I think the biggest benefit is being able to locate the call away from you. It gives you a little more freedom to move a bit because the yotes generally will pin point the sound. Just picked up one of the decoys that attach to the call as well, can't wait to try it out.

Good luck and give'em hell

If you can't shoot them I doubt if you have luck trapping them unless you have experience because coyotes will flip your traps or avoid them altogether

If trapping is your only alternative then get in touch with a nuisance trapper because those guys have the experience and tools to do the job right

Please don't.  You can get a hand call pretty cheap.

Fox pro spitfire is relatively cheap and you can download a lot of extra free sounds from their website.

XM193 would not be the best choice (unless you want the pelts).  I would personally load up some ammo using the Sierra 50 grain Blitz bullets.  These will provide a cleaner kill than FMJ bullets (albeit with more pelt damage).

I'll have the traps checked daily even if I'm not there

where do you take the pelts?

Send some up here. We need them to become a nuisance so I can shoot them all day for their pelts and ingredients for Chinese food.

hell would a Florida pelt even be good for anything?

What I mean by that is up here in the fall/winter the pelts "fur out" and bring the best prices, a summer/spring pelt in my area would bring nothing

You could always have it tanned and hang it on the wall like I did, any kids that come into my living room go crazy over it, well that and the full mount bobcat and the mountain lion head/rug

They seem to be getting significantly larger the past few years. This is the last one I shot, in November. Kicked another about the same size out of it's bed under a hemlock tree today. It was snowing, and quiet, but I still have a hard time believing I walked up on it. Maybe it was just sitting tight hoping I'd go on by.

Don't miss when you have a shot.  A miss equals an educated yote and you will never see him again.  He will still come around but you won't see him.  A lot of people don't give coyotes enough credit, they are very intelligent with excellent eyesight, hearing and olfactory senses. I enjoy hunting them because they are so crafty.  Good luck and shoot straight.

[#49]
For foothold traps I'd consider the Bridger #2 modified traps, either straight or off set jaw.  I use the #3 modifieds on my line, but I have to have them able to break through a layer of frozen dirt/snow.  The #2 is all the trap you'll need to hang up the yotes in FL.  Get a good book or video and learn the process.  It's not hard, just takes attention to detail.  Coyote Fever by Ray Milligan is a good one.  Best of luck to you.
