I'm not sure if it's like this in the rest of the country, but up in Massachusetts we're seeing a bunch of ticks this year. In the last three days I've walked about 7 miles (on sidewalks) and have pulled two ticks off myself.

In the last month two people I know (a co-worker and a friend's co-worker) have been diagnosed with lime disease.

Yeah, I have noticed a lot more of the damned things this year. I'm sure the warm/non-existent winter has something to do with it.

A couple weeks ago I went shooting in the woods for about 20 min...seriously pulled off no less that fifteen of the bastards. I fucking hate ticks.

I never seem to get them on me. One showed up on the dog after a camping trip. The cat found and removed it.

In general in my AO all pests are in abundance right now.

I've been fighting Lyme Disease for the past 9 months.  Today I'm actually seeing a Lyme specialist.  So far heavy duty antibiotics including a month of having a PICC line in me so I could inject antibiotics into my heart,  no alcohol, no caffeine, low carbs, no sugar.  It has been a challenge for me but I'll beat it.  Hell, I just want to be normal again.

Sounds like it hit you a hell of a lot harder than it got me.
I had high dose antibiotics and a lot of time out of work. It was on again off again.
I found out a lot about it. From what I got, no one really knows a lot about it. It's one of maybe a hundred or more tick related issues. STARI was the term I was given.
Southern Tick Associated Rash Illness. Basiclly they weren't sure if it was Lime or not so they treatedfor it. It worked so they declared it Lime.

There are 2 schools of thought on lime.
1) It's like VD, once you have it,it's yours forever. It never goes away., but goes "dormant" only to return.
2) Says it's like a cold, in that you have it until your body kills it or it kills you.

Either way it's pretty rough. I don't wish it on anybody...

I'm going on vacation next weekend. I've been pretty reserved with insecticide in my yard because of the kids, but I'm going scortched earth the night before we leave. Liquid Sevin around the perimeter, Sevin dust in the yard, insecticidal soap in the garden and on my hops.

The dog will be with friends and the kids with me. Hopefully, I can mitigate any tick issues before I get back and the yard will be OK for the little ones again. Pulled a tick off my dog yesterday and he's only been in my yard.

Fuck it, maybe I'll get some chickens!

Good job!  Since I got this damnable disease I've waged chemical warfare too.  I spray my gun range every few weeks.

I usually go fully organic, except for the perimeter which I lightly spray. Haven't had a tick issue in 3 years. My dog died back in April and I've had a puppy for a month. He's already got ticks. Too young yet for the drops, but I'm right on the edge of the 16 week age recommendation.

But only just deal.....

We have a bumper crop this year too in SC. Picked one off of my calf this evening just grilling out. I need to re-up my YMCA membership so I can go swim after work when I'm done working in the field... That's about the best way I have found to de-tick.

I go scorched earth with the DEET. It's arguably not very effective for ticks though. I need to get some permethrin and hit up all my hiking clothes.

Once I found a tick in a... shall we say rather personal area That fucker got dropped in a can of lighter fluid and torched on general principle.

The chiggers have been eating me alive this year.  Got ticks also but they never seem to bite.  Bought Sawyers permethrin made for spraying clothing.  Good for six weeks or six washes.  Long sleve T and over the calf socks.  So far so good.

Hey guys, just a heads up.  I was getting marginally better from the Lyme Disease and my Dr. ran more tests on me.  The results of them really make me believe I'll win the LaRue rifle contest this month...I have Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever!  Only about 800 people a year in America get that.  I'm one lucky SOB!

When it comes to ticks, or symptoms (I never knew I was bit) don't blame it on something else!  Don't think it's your arthritis getting worse, don't try to ignore the headaches, don't think your tinnitus is getting worse, don't think you're just getting tired because of the weather.  That's what I did for too long and now I could have some pretty serious complications.  Sometimes trying to be a tough guy and "walking it off" is pretty stupid!

Most family doctors don't know too much about tick borne diseases.  If they do, they probably follow IDSA's recommendations, which there's a lot of debate about the IDSA's testing, Doctor board and connection with the insurance companies.  If you think you may have a tick borne disease, find a reputable Lyme specialist.  It may cost a lot of money, but they just may save your life!

Sometime I think it'd be healthier physically and mentally just to soak my clothes in diesel fuel every day before I had to go out into tick/chigger country.

And I've never had a chigger bite yet, so I'm wanting to keep that record.

You might want to check out treating your clothing with permethrin.  You spray your clothing with it and it lasts up to 40 some odd days or 6 washings.  Anymore you can even find it in the outdoor / fishing section of most Wal Marts.

The guinea hens are a trip to watch.
They walk about in a tight group and scan the blades of grass and shrubs looking for bugs.

Getting overrun in the last 4-5 weeks.  Mostly very small (seed ticks?).  The dogs are frontlined, but we're not.  Every time I come in from hunting (just about every day), I'm in the shower, and I feel like burning my clothes.  I need to get some permethrin.  We pull tons of small ticks off the dogs, and they go in the fishtanks (the fish love them).  Still, it's a real hassle.  I always feel like they're all over me.  Hardly a tick last year.

Lyme is kinda the "disease du jour", like TMJ was a few years ago.

It's not new except for the name, doctors were connecting the symptoms with tick bites at least as far back as the late 1800's, and the Otzi (the stone-age man who popped out of a glacier in Italy) tested positive for it.

I used to worry about Lyme quite a lot, because I spend so much time outdoors, and I've had several friends come down with it. So I dug into the scientific literature. The good news is that there is no evidence to support the idea of chronic Lyme disease, other than as psychosomatic.

From the CDC:

A little bag of powdered sulfur will send ticks right on down the road. Just dust your socks, cuff and waistband, and you'll be good to go. Dust your hat a little if you wear one, too.

It doesn't take much.
