I'm looking for a good budget rain jacket. I usually wear a North Face Denali fleece jacket when outdoors, but it does not do a good enough job of keeping me dry. I want a rain jacket that will be perfect for spring/fall. I would prefer something with a detachable or hidden hood. My budget is $100. What should I take a look at?

($69.00 more or less) Find a Columbia outlet store.
($99.00 new) My favorite is a Nike I bought a few years ago (golf rain gear tends to breath, flex, and keep you dry).
($39.00 clearance) Eddie Bauer has some cheap versions like Frog Toggs.  They do not breath and I can't stand that.  It's already humid, hot, and raining here in Texas.  Not worth staying dry if I'm dripping sweat...
That's just my experience with 3 I bought over the past few years.  All less than 100 dollars.

I have some rough weather sailing gear as well; but, it doesn't hold a candle to the Nike or Columbia and costs 5x as much.

I sport a Carhartt J162, I paid $120 for it almost 3 years ago now. It has DEFINITELY gone the distance and has proven worth every penny. I wear it working construction, going fishing and camping, it even survived a season on the slopes. Its almost perfect in the spring and fall, gets a little hot in the summer, but in the winter you can just throw a hoodie or fleece underneath it and its good to go.

The hood is removable and attached by buttons, 3 outside pockets, 2 inside. Nearly entirely double stitched, beefed up elbows, neoprene wrist cuffs and velcro cinches, zipper under button flapped front. blah blah blah, you can find the specs, just google Carhartt J162

Its been through everything short of a razor blade attack and no rips or tears, and after a half dozen wears and a wash it stops making annoying sounds when you walk, unlike the cheaper pvc and plastic coats.

Great product, highly recommended. You wont be disappointed.

I just got my son a 5.11 Sabre from LA Police Gear. He's fallen in love with it.

My only observation is that it could be an inch or so longer. Has the feature set you asked about and more. I liked the side arm zippered access.

FWIW,

As in any situation, the most important aspect is to define your requirements.   In this case, the requirements are a little vague.    They are :

a rain jacket
for spring/fall
with a detachable or hidden hood
budget is $100

Now, at first, that seems fine.   However, the purpose is not specified nor are the conditions.    A rain jacket for construction or farming is different  from a turkey hunting  rain jacket as those are from a ski touring or alpine or mountaineering jacket as still yet from current trends in a backpacking jacket.     For construction or farming, weight is not an issue and fix is not as critical.   Hunting jackets just need to primarily meet your legal requirement and game requirements regarding camouflage.   The rest is just nice for a hunting jacket.   If you are camping with buddies around an old shack or car camping for the weekend, just about any old thing would do.     On the other hand, a good way to get one’s self killed is to go mountaineering with the wrong gear.   Mountaineering shells are some of the most expensive pieces of rain gear you will find, ranging from $250 to $550 , and the are worth it… well, if your life is worth anything.    Those jackets have to be strong, durable, light, versatile, breathable, and fit well .  Backpacking rain jackets are a spin off of mountaineering jackets.    They are focused on being light, versatile, breathable,  though not as durable, strong, and range a lot in fit.   Many hunting jackets today are now moving toward be modeled after backpacking jackets.     Many of these (backpacking or hunting rain jackets) run from about $70 to about $250.

Also,  a state like Ohio can have late spring temps about like what many would think of as a spring time in Texas or late fall weather like many would associate with Michigan .

When mountaineering or long distance backpacking, you are on your  own for very long periods of time, from days to weeks, and the failure of your gear can mean the loss of life.   It is nothing like car camping, hunting, farming, construction, or other sports when it comes to isolation.    Some hunters do mix backpacking with hunting, or is it the other way around?   In many cases, routine outdoor activities in the rain can be addressed with military Gortex jacket.    While not very good for backpacking and marginal for mountaineering, they often work as well as anything else in other situations such as hunting, farming, or construction.   Generally, tactical jackets "suck wind by the cubic yard" when it comes to backpacking and mountaineering.

Given that you already wear a North Face Denali fleece jacket ,  I am really going to have to jump out “Into Thin Air” and I would encourage you to look for a rain jacket from the North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Sierra Designs, Patagonia, Marmot, or other similar companies.    Nike has also produced some good products in their “All Conditions” gear line that go beyond their golf line, for backpacking to full blown top end mountaineering products.     Look for products that fall into these companies lines of “fast & lite” products.    These are the products which match the performance you are already accustomed.

One of most well rounded and popular rain jackets is the Marmot Precip Jacket at about $100 … when not on sell, which is easily found on sale for $70/

It's OK.   I saved money by only having one firearm, a 1911 in 45 ACP.     It does everything from skeet, deer hunting, long range rifle competition, fire suppression, "Appleseed Shoots", to concealed carry with just swim trunks and a t-shirt.   This way, I can have 12 rain coats.

I have a pretty old version of the White Sierra jacket that has served me well ~it stuffs into one of its pockets and would fit in a cargo pocket.  Lives under the seat of my car.  Other than leaking through the seams after an hour in a downpour it's been a great "just in case" jacket.

Columbia has been a great company to deal with and their products have always been a great value for me.  Most of my attention is going to looking over their jackets right now... though I'm distracted by that 5.11 Saber jacket too.

Guess I'm looking for soft, quiet, comfortable, professional looking, lots of pockets, compatible with holster or sling, breathable, water rolls right off it, tough enough to roll around in the dirt or jog through branches, and not so expensive I'm afraid to hurt it.

So I've been looking for quite a while...

Mountain Hardware Epic
Pretty good deal for about $100. I have had mine for about 3+ years and have been fairly pleased with it. I did have to send it back to Mtn Hardware to get the seams re-taped but their customer service was very good.
Might want to look at the Patagonia Torrent shell as well.

I have an Arc'Teryx Beta SL Jacket that I got on sale for around $175 and it is worth the extra money if you are willing to spend it. Snoop around for a good deal.
