I'm just getting into backpacking and am in need of gear. I've camped for years so I have some basics, but I've never backpacked so I don't have gear that is specific for that.

The main items that I'll need is a good 4-5 day pack, a tent, and a sleeping bag. All of these items add up fast and I would like to save a few bucks early on instead of going all out right at the beginning. So, I'm thinking about mil-surp for my pack. I'm 6'3" and weigh 185-200 depending upon my current fitness level. Would a Alice pack suit me better than the medium?  Would you recommend any other packs that are tough/durable/low cost?

I appreciate your input.

The Italian Military surplus frame packs at THe old Grouch's are pretty sweet...

Well crap I just looked and they are sold out...

Maybe you could find one somewhere else.

Go to REI or another outdoors store.

Tell them what type of backpacking you want to do, how much you plan to carry, etc.

They will measure your torso and provide a few packs for you to try out matching your body type. They will load them up with weights and you can see how they fit.

This is the way to get a pack, especially if you are a taller guy that won't have most packs made to fit you.

And just something to think about.

It doesn't matter how much money you spent on the rest of your gear if you can't get it where your going.

If I was gonna go top notch on anything, it would be the bag. Cause your gonna be sunk if you get 3 days out and your most necessary piece of equipment fails.

You'll find other things you can skimp on a bit if your just getting started.

And Zedhead nailed it so I'm gonna leave your question at what he said.
