OK so here is the deal, the wife and I rescued a dog from a shelter a month ago, all in all a pretty good dog. Listens pretty good for the most part except she chases cats. We don't have any cats so day-to-day not much of a problem, but occasionally out in the yard she will bolt after neighborhood cats. Obviously this could lead to some problems, since this is the one time we have noticed she will not call off.  So what im looking for is a decent training collar. I am looking for suggestions for a decent collar that doesnt break the bank. if any one has any idea I would appreciate the input.

Try a sportdog brand collar. I have used one with good results. BTW I have tried it on myself and it works well.

I'm about 3 weeks into a new to us 5mo Shepherd Rott mix, rescue pup.  She listens great, but LOVES birds.  Squirrels she ignores, birds drive her crazy.

I'm using a standard, nylon, choker type of collar.  I've been reading and watching the 'Dog Whisperer' guy, and I like his techniques.  In the last 5 day's she's come a long way.  Its not as quick of a transition as I assume an electric collar would be, but I'm convinced that establishing solid dominance as the pack leader will work better in the long run.

Not really what you asked for, but you can probably put up a decent length of garden fencing yourself for less than the cost of a collar.   It'll work all the time, too, unlike the collar.     I've put them up at a couple of houses in the past.....it's relatively quick to do and lets you just open the door and let the dog out rather than babysit them.
