I'm shopping for a good pair of insulated (800 grams) hunting boots that I'd use on 4-hour jaunts into the north Maine woods during the colder November - December months.

They have to be waterproof yet breathable.  I'd also like a lot of ankle support.  I typically wear gaiters to keep my pants dry.  Any ideas?

I currently own a pair of Rocky "Bear Claws."  They're great, but a size too small.  I can only wear them when I don't have on thick socks.  I also have a $135 stipend from work to purchase boots...so I'm gonna keep wearing my current boots during the week....figured I might as well invest in a good pair of hunting treads.

I have been eying Danner boots for some time. Models I would be interested in would far less insulated than what you are looking for but you might want to check out Danner's website.

i have been using rubber boots with 1200 grams of insulate for the last couple of years.i bought them at Dicks sporting goods.  i used to use 800 gram rocky gore-tex boots, do not remember which model. the rocky's made my feet hurt and they started leaking. i re-sealed them but only use them for small jaunts into the woods in warmer temps. i have been very happy with the all rubber boot, keeps my feet warm and dry and have not had a problem with scent.

Take a good look at the Meindle line from Cabelas.  Superior craftsmanship, rugged, waterproof and plenty of ankle support.  They take a bit to break in, but they're ultimately comfortable if fitted correctly.   Pricy, but $180-250/10 years is cheap for great footwear.  The single most important piece of gear in my book.

I have a pair of these.

They are the best boots I have ever owned for outdoors use in the cold.
