This may have been asked/discussed several time in the past, but I need some input on GPS units.  My need is for a GPS that has mapping for water and streets.  This will be used on my boat for the Gulf of Mexico (just a few miles off shore) and for local streets (needed this back when Rita hit).  Oh and with my eyes, the bigger the screen the better, and it needs to be handheld.

Thanks,
ST

Marine use: Lowrance.

Land use: Garmin.

By far. If you want to do both, Garmin does better interfacing with a PC which will help you get the maps you need.  Look at the 60CSX.

Garmin 60CSx is the best hand held unit out currently. It has all the mapping capabilities you want and the best reception on the market, period! My unit even gets a signal in the middle of my house and a good one at that. Battery life is amazing too, even with rechargeable batteries. Upgradable memory cards and you can get preloaded cards with maps as well. If you've done much research you probably all ready know all this?

Id like to disagree.  I just recently bought the Garmin 60csx and didnt like it as much as my Garmin Venture HC.

Pros for 60csx compared to Vista HC: Bigger screen

Pros for Vista HC:  Much better reception and accuracy, and has a quicker signal.  Also the screen is 1000 times brighter and sharper.

Whatever Garmin is doing with their new H recievers is amazing.  Even though the 60csx is highly sensitive reciever as well, the HC models on the etrek are just that much better.  This is partly do to the fact that the 60csx is older than the new HC etreks.

If u dont mind a smaller screen then go Venture HC.  If you need street maps & auto routing then get the Legend HC.  If you also want the compass and alti. then go Vista HC.

Garmin E-Trex Vista HCx.  You can get additional map chips for marine, roads, and topo.  I would like to try the Garmin Colorado but it is brand new and has some quirks.  The Vista HCx also has all of the mounts you may need for the boat and what not.  Great overall unit.  The cheapest I found at the time I bought it was Campmor.com.  Good luck.

The Garmin 76CSx has come down in price recently:
www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000CSQRYS/ref=dp_olp_1?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2AFGT6Y72ZAO6&colid=86LPJ1VZCEXS

The 76CSx is basically the same as the 60CSx except for the case (buttons on top of screen instead of below, floats). As usual, you have to shell out extra for the mapping software.

I bought the Venture HC just based on reading user reviews. I use it when driving around the State. I have not tried it while hiking yet. Screen display is sharp and easy to read. Took me a couple weeks to figure out what it would do since this is my first GPS device.

Actual image of my Venture HC.

Though I'm using a Magellan for marine use, without a doubt Lowrance is the best.

Any GPS will get you from point A to point B but if you want map detail, Lowrance has more detail than anyone elses software.
