The wife and I went up to Stone Mountain State Park near Elkin, NC this weekend and took my two dogs with me. They are 8 month old Boxer/retriever mix brother and sister. We got up to the campsite and let them off their leashes and they went hog wild in the water for hours. They stayed close to camp but did a lot of exploring.

Lighting is bad on this one of them coming up out of Widows Creek.

Here they are soaking wet and wanting some attention.

When we got home they crashed on the floor for about 4 hours straight.

Nice pics. My dog regularly goes with me on backpacking/paddling trips. I have countless hours spent teaching her to walk beside me on the trail, not to chase wildlife and how to sit in a canoe. She's so good, she balances on my kayak in Lake Superior. I also taught her how to catch salmon. She has to wait until I'm done fishing and then I tell her to "go get the fish!" and then "bring it here". She's awesome. She's 3 yrs old and has backpacked and paddled in 9 states so far.

I have some pics of her doing this on my webshots, here's a link to the album

After a trip out, my little buddy curls up on her chair and crashes for two days

How did the dogs do with their packs? My dogs are getting them soon, (boxer, aus cattle dog). They will be carrying their own bug out gear.

Looks like they had fun.  My dog would be ready to go home after about 30 minutes and would expect me to carry him.

But he does love to play in some water/mud

So far I only have a pack for Scamp, the larger brown one. Took a while to get it adjusted to where it did not fall off of him when he went charging through the woods. He carried all of their dog food, plus some water bottles. The brand I got is not the greatest, but it works. Once we got it all adjusted, he didn't seem to mind.

Cool!

My Lab loves to go backpacking.

He crashes out like your dogs too, only for a few days.

Hey Waldo. I don't recognize those shelters. What trail system are they part of?

Those are in Oil Creek State park. Pa.

( They suck too)   I'd rather sleep in a tent.

Any pointers for a first time with dog trip?I have two 3/yo Weimaraners that I will be taking out with me this fall/spring.They are a little rambunctious but overall well behaved.

I was thinking of taking them on a few over-nighters where I'll be camping just outside my Jeep before I take them backpacking on the trails.I figured this would be good to see how they act.

Awesome pics.

Will they be carrying their own packs? If so, make sure you do a few test hikes to adjust them to the dogs individually. There are several different brands of dog packs. Im not 100% happy with the one I got. Plan on getting two from Wolf Packs. Here is the link to their online store. I have heard great things about them. The packs are very rugged and also made for the dogs comfort:

Buying dog packs is a real crap shoot. I'm not all that happy with the one I have for my dog either. I have to pay a lot of attention when it comes to packing it evenly (and that means every time I feed, I have to rebalance it).

Yep, same thing here. I try to pack the food in one meal size baggies so I dont have to take too much time rebalanceing. Still a pain though.

I planned on them carrying their own packs. Is the pack in the picture a MountainSmith? It looks like the ones the local shop had I looked at over the weekend.

Anything in particular I should be looking for that you wish you would have known when buying yours?

looks like they let in too much wind and let too much heat from the fire escape

I do the same.  The problem I see with the Mountainsmith that I have for my dog is that he is very broad across the chest/shoulders and that causes the pack to ride a bit high on him. Kind of makes it top heavy, raises the center of gravity higher than it should be.

It's not that the pack is bad, (It's held up very well) it's just not the best fitting for him.

I take my dogs when ever I go into the mountains. In my neck of the woods the coyotes will send a bitch in heat into my camp in hopes of drawing my dogs off to chase her and then the pack will attack them and eat them. I've had a hard time in this regard and ended up having the dogs sleep in the tent for fear for their lives. They would send the bitch in in the mornings and in the early evenings. It got so bad each day that I started shooting at them . Wenaha makes good packs for dogs. their available now on ebay.Iv'e used them exclusively for over 20 years you wont be dissapointed with these.
