I recently picked up a surefire socom 7.62 suppressor for my 308's. I keep seeing that it's rated for up to 300 win mag, so i'm thinking I need to setup a new rifle.

How should I setup a "practical" long range rifle with a suppressor. I need to confirm, but I believe 300 prc should be fine through the socom, so i'm leaning that route. Is a 26" barrel with an 8" suppressor getting to the point of too long and heavy?

Tikka or Sako with threaded barrel. The Christensen Arms Evoke is also about the same cost.  Stay with 300 Win Mag the ammo is more available.
The 300PRC is about 100 ft per sec faster but availability of ammo and brass makes a difference.
Barnes offers one ammo weight in 300 PRC to 6 or 7 choices in 300 Win Mag

If you feel a need to step up from 300 WM then 375H&H is the solution Christensen Arms makes the Evoke in 375H&H and it shoots really good. But that’s another suppressor …..

I was going to chime in about sticking with the 300 Winchester. I love wildcats and hard to find cartridges, but brass gets expensive and you can find the 300 WM almost anywhere.

7 Mag or 7 PRC would be more practical for a long range rig, IMHO.

I'd do a longer barrel if I were doing a magnum. 26 or even 28. I also don't walk around with rifles so length doesn't bother me. With a heavy long barrel and a can it would probably be a sweetheart to shoot. If there isn't a factory rifle setup like you want you can buy an action barrel and stock of your choosing.

The PRC seems to be pretty easy to find. When it's so easy to order online I don't really worry about stuff like that.

300 PRC can be handloaded from mild (308 win) to wild (above 300wm).
Its my favorite magnum 30.   I plink with 200gr loads that are in 30-06 territory and shoot 1000+ with full power loads.

longer barrel is better.  as said, look at 28".   Not only is your MV going to be a bit better, as the slower powders get a complete burn, but the pressure at the muzzle will be a bit lower which is important for the suppressor rating.

that said, surefire wouldn't be my first choice on a precision rifle.  grab one of the TBAC magnus

300 PRC is a great cartridge.  Factory ammo is decent quality but only if you like Hornady, because other than them, there isnt much.  I do reload and shoot weights from 180 to 220, from mild to pretty wild in velocity.  Barrel life is gonna be 1500 rounds or less unless you keep your reloads on the conservative side.

Ammo availability might be a factor if you have to shoot factory out in Timbuktu while hunting, and that is the ONLY thing the 300 WM has over the PRC.

A 26" barrel with a 8" long can is gonna be alot.  My 300 PRC has a 30" barrel, and from a bench, its not really an issue.  But toting a gun with 30"+ of barrel and or can around is a bunch of potential shenanigans.

Other options?  6.5 PRC is a proven round, with good factory availability, but I consider it to be a "light magnum".  7 PRC is a good round as well, but has shown to be less than great with factory ammo coming in far under expected velocities, but really comes into its own with handloading where you can control alot more variables.  300 NM is an option if you really want a big dog, but its gonna bankrupt you to shoot it alot even if you reload.  I dont recommend anything with a effing belt on it, especially if you want to get into reloading.

7 PRC or 300 PRC out to a mile or so.  300 NM beyond that.

300 WM can be a good cartridge but the PRC is gaining popular fast.

I'm very encouraged by all the 300WM love so far. I've been somewhat discouraged by other threads pushing the prc's, but I tend to like the more commonly available cartridges.

I do see all the sako and tikka love, but I really like to buy american when I can. I kind of want a chassis rifle, and see savage has a "tactical" chassis model in both 300 win mag and prc with a 24" barrel. That may be tough to walk past.

Ruger american in 300WM is also interesting, but only 20 and 22 inch barrels available.

I wouldn't mind a rifle i could take on some eventual elk hunt, but thats not realy the primary focus. Though, the ruger american in 300wm is probably a pretty solid entry elk rifle.

Honestly, the sig cross magnum is what I really want. But sig is... giving me enough excuses to look at other options right now.

Are rem 700 based builds still pretty good to go? I was just looking at magpul's catalog, and their 700 pro stock looks really nice. I might be tempted to build my own and use that as a base, but it seems kind of odd to build a 700 right now with remington somewhat  a relic of the past.

Aero solus actions looks nice, but they don't have a long action.

[Last Edit: ALASKANFIRE][Edited] [#13]
There's just no real reason to build off a Remington and even if you already had the gun it's tough to justify. The only way I'd do it is if I had the gun already and I'd just do one of the barrels set up for a barrel nut and swap it myself. If you are buying a new gun you should just get what you want out of the gate. If you want the Sig get that. What are your holdups with the Sig? The RPR seems like a good option for a good chunk less money. I think you can swap barrels on either so you could always change to another round with that bolt face fairly easily.

Once you get over $2k you are back at a place where putting your own together with a premium action is reasonable. It can be hard to justify the cost of a premium setup like this but it's a once time cost and essentially future proof.

Good video for .30 cal magnum comparison.  .300 win mag is no slouch compared to the prc with heavy bullets

If I personally didn’t have brass and dies for a win mag I would have went down the 300 PRC route. I like the case better and lean towards shooting heavy for caliber bullets. The 300 PRC has a nice accommodating throat dimension and you can definitely shoot the 230 gr Bergers easily in the PRC without sacrificing room for powder. In my win mag I shoot a 215 Berger hybrid and pretty well max the case fill out. I would think you can squeeze a bit more speed from the PRC as well. Winmags are proven and readily available most anywhere. But the two are basically ballistic twins.

The 300 PRC is nothing more then a modern 300 WM, and both will perform the same when you add a 0.150" freebore to the 300 WM for a COAL 3.700 inches.

As far as ammo availability, you can now find 300 PRC at most gun/sports stores, more so then 300 WM in some cases.

Now if you want to go with 300 WM, I would recommend that you build your own rifle like I did to get the most out of it. I went with the 300 WM match chamber which has 0.050" freebore that lets me run a coal of 3.625 with 220's and 215's. If you are planning to shoot out to a mile or more, I would go with the 0.150" freebore that will let you load 230's with a COAL of 3.700+. With both barrel chambers, I would go with a twist of 1:8, just like the PRC has. I have found that twist rate even works with 190's if you need to shoot them in a pinch.

In my build, I used REM ultra mag action with a 26 inch remage barrel, but I am planning on replacing it with Aero Precision Long action in the near future. With so many action and barrel manufactures out there, there is no reason not to build your own rifle now, it's like building an AR.

My stock is made by Cadex, but if I wanted to go with a chassis, I would go with the MPA BA Chassis

Do you reload?

Is this just a rifle for mowed range sniping?

I'm in the same boat right now, I have a nice old M700 LH LA, a Krieger barrel, Badger base/rings/lug and Surgeon bottom metal sitting around, perfect foundation for a .300 WM build.  I have 500 new .300 WM Lapua brass, dies, etc.

But, I keep thinking of selling all that and starting over with this in .300 PRC

Defiance Machine action
A good 1-8 twist barrel 26"
McMillan/Manners/Greyboe stock, probably McMillan since I'm old and don't like change.
NF ATACR scope 5-25X
TBAC Magnus RR
Trigger Tech
Not sure on bottom metal, what are the cool kids using for .300 PRC?

My credit card is recoiling in horror.

This is really just a setup for culling does out of a box blind at long range than I like to use my .308 at.

Use a 300 RUM bottom metal so you can use 300 RUM mags for the additional COAL if you are a hand loader.  I use this on my 300 PRC and it works great with my Manners stock.  As far as where?  Accurate makes one.  Not sure about Hawkins.

Fwiw, my 300wm 215 Berger LRHT is running at 2,864 over H1000. Switching to PRC may not get you as much as you think. But, if you want to build go for it.

Just share a bit about magazines and long actions...Technically there are 3 lengths of LA mags...industry standard has been 3.715", there is an oddball 3.775" that Remington may have offered for a bit, not really sure what its history is, and the CIP 3.850" mag that most everyone is using..Thats it for LA mags that I know of..Wyatts makes a 4.00" blind magazine, it requires a small bit of massaging on the action for it to fit a rem 700LA...I run the Accurate arms 3.850" rum mags, they have been flawless but the max cartridge overall lengths limited to about 3.760" maybe slightly more but you would have to insure your bullet tips don't touch anywhere in the magazine..I shoot 300rum, with the 5 rd accurate mag CIP 3.850" mags and these bullets are barnes 200 LRX, basically an up close hunting bullet for bears and moose...I load the 230/245 Berger hybrids longer at just shy of a 4.000"COL but I hand feed those rounds...The other problem is some makers don't offer a chassis or stock that will take the CIP 3.850" mags..so make sure they doo..I run the MPA BA chassis and it has a replaceable stop that can be changed to fit all 3 LA mag lengths, depending on what you want to run...So decide on cartridge and max overall length you might ever want to run, then find an action and stock/chassis that can take it...

Attached File

This is the MPA chassis, you can see the screw that holds the mag spacer in place, very simple but works excellent..You can also see the notch in the feed ramp to make sure bullet tips clear the  action.. This is my old 700 action in the MPA chassis, but my tenacity action is identical...Hopefully that helps you figure out what you want to do ...

The magazine info is very good. It’s my one pet peeve with my new Bergara HMR 300wm. The longest I can seat the 215 Berger is 3.60”. That is .113 off the lands. I need to find a solution for that. Really frustrating to be hamstrung by the magazine.

It is, I know before accurate came out with the rum mags, guys were buying the  338 lapua mags and having to take a small whiz wheel and cut out the ribs at the front end of the mag so the longer rum case could fit the mag..didn't seem to harm the mags, everyone I heard about said they worked great, but that sucks to have to cut one up to make it work..No longer an issue with accurate mags, I am pretty sure they make all 3 lengths along with bottom metal to fit them for most stocks...I like the way MPA did it with 3 small bolt in clips, works great, is easy to change if one needs to  and they act like they are part of the chassis not screwed in....This is what they look like...

Attached File

EDIT TO ADD....

For anyone who uses steel/aluminum mags who think they might need to tweak the mag lips ever, MPA makes a simple tool that works very good for adjusting mag lips as needed...I got one when I got my chassis because I've heard horror stories about feed lip issues..been stuck in a pocket on the drag bag, have never used it for anything, but I still think it is a good tool to have....

I ordered the stock from McMillan this week, decided to stick with .300 WM.

Load will be
215M
Lapua
Magnum
Barnes 175 LRX

3000 FPS should be easy enough.

Your issue is not the magazine, but the stock/chassis your Bergara action is in. Since the Bergara action is a copy of the Remington 700 long action, i would look at the KRG Bravo chassis for it. It comes with a spacer that lets you use 3.715 magazines or with out it, the CIP 3.850 ones.

Correct. The Accurate magazines are mad in 3 lengths. The Bergara will only take the shortest which will only add .015” to my oal. Need to look at a chassis or stock that will accept cip length magazines.

I recently picked up the Sig Magnum Beartooth with the Proof barrel in .300PRC.  I'm really enjoying it so far.  I have only shot Hornady factory stuff so far but I think it has potential.  And the TBAC Magnus can with the brake really helps manage recoil.
