I have a 6.5 Grendel and load for it, just got a 6.5 CM and loading for it, now for some reason I am wanting a 6.5 PRC or maybe 7 PRC.  Anyone shoot those?  Mostly looking for longer range stuff, maybe some hunting. Biggest thing around is whitetail, but more interested in just shooting.  Still working on the 6.5 CM but just started jonesing for a 6.5 or maybe a 7 PRC.  I have never shot either, but from the videos and reviews I have been watching, it seems like 6.5 PRC is analogous to a .270 Win.  I have a .270 Win also and have taken a lot of deer with it, usually hunt with the Grendel now.

Anyway, worth checking on one of the PRC cartridges?  I was leaning towards 6.5 PRC as it would give some commonality of bullets for loading and less recoil. I would load for it.  Thanks.

I've heard someone call the 6.5 prc is what the 6.5 cm should have been...

IDK...kind of a toss up. The 6.5 prc will take white tail a long ways out but the 7prc will be more capable on larger game out to those distances. The 7 is really just a modernized 7 rmag. Uses the same if not more powder than the rmag but no belted cartridge to deal with..and rifling suited for the heavier bullets. You will burn thru more powder and the bullets are more expensive for maybe not much more gain if you are mainly punching paper. But if you ever want to go elk hunting in the rockies....it will be mo' betta than a 6.5 boolit..

The 6.5 prc...you already have some common components but a prc rifle will still get out there and I think it is rifled for heavier bullets too so should be able to handle the heaviest 6.5s out there 150+ grain pills.

I'd say get the 6.5 prc sounds like what would suit you the best based on your criteria.

How far do you plan to hunt deer? My buddy hunts elk with his Creedmoor and dropped this one below at 750 yards. I have shot my Creedmoor to a mile on steel so it will go pretty far.

Nothing wrong with a new cartridge though. If you are worried about recoil then just stop there and shoot your Creedmoor. The 6.5 PRC is a magnum bolt face and gives you a couple hundred feet per second over the Creedmoor. The 7mm PRC is a larger cartridge more like the 7mmRM as mentioned. You can see the size difference in the pic below. If I was stepping up from the 6.5 Creedmoor I would go to the 7mm PRC so you are getting a good step up.

Also interested in hearing this. My son has a very long list of game with his 6.5 PRC.

OP, I have the same cartridges, and more, as you plus the 6.5 PRC. I would probably get the 7 PRC if there were loads with bullets I like. The 6.5 PRC is an awesome round but as I get older, and bullets improve, I am liking heavier high bc bullets.

Just get the 7mm PRC. Been watching this caliber for a bit. So far, seems like an accurate flat shooting caliber.

One thing I didn't mention, but either way, they will be shot with a suppressor on them.

I’d do the 7mm but mostly because the 6.5 is a lot of fucking around for 200fps more than a Creedmoor.

7mm gets you a wide selection of bullets with less blast and recoil than the .300.

My question is, if yes to the 7 PRC, then why not get a 300 PRC?

As I understand it from my research, with the 7 PRC there is less recoil, better ballistic coefficient, probably slightly cheaper components for reloading, ??

Uhm, no, both burger and hornaday have higher BC's in the 30 cal than in 7mm...

For Berger for the 7mm the 190Hybrid Target(G7=.384) or the 195 elite hunter(G7=.387) or the hornaday A-tip 190(G7=.422)

Versus

The Berger 30cal, 245 Hybrid target(G7=.413) or the Hybrid Target 245(G7=.433) Or the Hornaday 250 A-tip (G7=.442)..

And 30 cal has far more different bullets available commercially than 7mm by a long shot...As for recoil, not sure the difference would be enough to matter, if so there are many known ways to reduce recoil, weather its a simple limb saver butt pad or mercury tube or firearm weight or muzzle brake/can...Not sure I would let recoil decide my firearms fate with how many choices there are now days to limit recoil...Regardless, what ever you pick will do what you want, so they all will work, just matters what best suits your needs/wants..

You pay for that on your shoulder.

The 7mm walks a line between energy and BC that balances between hunting and target shooting. I can shoot my 280 ackley all day with 162 gra ELDs vs my 30-06 that is beating the hell out of me after about 25 rounds.

The local Sportsman’s Warehouse has a Tikka T3x Lite in 6.5PRC that’s been there for a few months. It calls my name…I just haven’t jumped yet. Not sure if I want to add another caliber. I really like the concept but my 6.5 CM does what I need it to…

It has been my experience that the limited weight bullet selection of the 6.5 prc vs. The 7 prc limits the 6.5 prc to some extent especially at long range past 500 yards.  Inside of 400 yards the 6.5 prc is fine but the 7 is my new favorite.   The bc of the 7mm just outdoors the 6.5 at longer range. The 6.5 has let me down past 500 yards.

Just curious: in what manner has it let you down?

Hornady 147gr 6.5CM: 2695
Hornady 147gr 6.5PRC: 2910

So…215fps. Not worth the trouble.

6.5 all the way. Started loading and hunting with one last year. 2 deer and an elk dead as could be. Shot 7s and 300s before on game. It’s does everything just as well, but 6.5 bullets are a lot easier to source than 7s. Less recoil, just as lethal.

It’s not the gun or cartridge, just the shooter.

That’s with a 20 mph full value wind with my 156 load and a 22in barrel. It’ll kill past 1000 easy.

@Ryan_Scott

No, 3010fps with a 153gr. Berger Hybrid.

Extrapolate that out to 600y and you are looking at a difference of 20" of drop and 400lbs of energy difference.

Sorta of this.

If you are not having issues taking game with 6.5g, you are not going to see a practical gain jumping over using your current 6.5cm to a 6.5prc. you cost are simply going to increase per round.  In regard to long range shooting, run that data on it to see how much effective range you going to gain from the PRC and see if its worth it.  For example, in Virginia, I have access to a 1000 yard range but given the average site lines, going to a PRC would not make sense for me. I can appreciate the advantages the come with moving to a newer cartridge, but if i dont have the range to actually take add vantage of it, its sorta of wasted.  My opionion.  shot your 6.5CM barrel out and replace it with a PRC when the time coms.

I have a bunch of 6.5 CMs that I use to shoot out to 1 mile, and I went with 300 PRC for longer range.  Bergara HMR Pro with an all steel YHM Phantom... recoil is not bad.

Still haven't decided anything, still playing around with what I have trying to get better.

Part of me even has been thinking .270 win since I have ammo and tons of brass and older .270 I used to hunt with. Was thinking maybe something with a faster twist for longer, heavier bullets.  The  X-Bolt 2 Hell's Canyon Max LR looks interesting to me and is quite comparable to the 6.5 PRC from what I have seen.

As a hand loader I always ask myself what do I want the bullet to do? Is there a bullet that will do that available. If so which is optimal and what case will it go in? Then I find a gun to fit those qualifications.

Apples to apples, about 200fps.  25" 6.5prc on 2013 action, 140eldm@3070fps.  26" 6.5creed on a 2013 action, 140eld@2890fps.  Both barrels are bart 5r 8tw. My 7prc is a 26" on a cdg action, 184berger f opens@3040fps.

That would be the 6.5 PRC.

Earlier this year I got the urge to shoot a mile. There is a website where you can post if you have hit a 36" square gong at a mile. Handy link to website. I looked into what it would take rifle wise and it got pretty expensive pretty quick, especially for a one time thing. I was kind of hoping the urge would pass, but it didn't so I started putting stuff together.

Mark 1, Mod 0

The action is BAT M left bolt\right port\left eject, Master Class stock, March High Master 10 - 60 X 56, 30" Kreiger barrel, Bix'N Andy trigger set for 2 oz.

The Mod 0 is 6 BRA, not enough for a mile really but I can shoot it in a local 300 and 600 yard Varmint Benchrest match and have a go at 1,000 yards.

Mod 1 is in progress. 29" Kreiger barrel, 6.5 PRC.

I had been debating 6.5 PRC or 7 PRC and had decided on the 7 but found a 6.5 barrel and kit, dies, brass, bullets and will give it a go. Should be enough. If not there is always the 7.

I don't hunt so terminal performance is not a concern, just ballistic performance at the for end of the shot. Berger makes a good 6.5 bullet, 153.5gr, G1 BC0.694, G7 BC0.356. Should be able to launch it better than 2,900 FPS, pretty close to 3,000.

If I already have a 6.5CM I buy the 7mm PRC.  IMO, the difference between the 6.5cm and 6.5PRC isn't really enough to justify the purchase.  If I get a 6.5PRC I probably sell the CM.

7mm PRC is enough more gun there's a clear separation.

300PRC is just overkill for most things in North America....it's not even really on my radar for anything.
