I have a old home I just bought a year ago and the windows are one part of this 54 year home that has never been replaced. Now I don't have the money to replace the 6 windows on my first floor or thats what I'd do. What I need is something that can keep these windows secured when I'm not home . I should also tell you all that three of the windows have A/C unites in them.

Now the town I live in is not a crime haven its a nice little town where everyone waves and when you see a friend and your both driving its ok for both of you to block traffic going both ways so you can talk. So I really don't want to place bars on my windows unless I really have to.

If the glass is broken, bad folks get in.  If however you just want to secure the sash, and the frames are wooden, you can simply run a screw into them as a short term fix.  Short of replacing the glass with a ballistic upgrade (which you said you can't do right now) I see no alternative to bars, except possibly cheap electric eye type detectors.  If there is, I hope someone will share it.  I'd be interested as well.
