If you're going to be serious about it, spend the money to get a good multi-filament line. They are very, very thin for their strength. I use 10#, because anything less is so thin that tying knots is difficult. Then I use a leader of flourocarbon.
The one and only advantage that mono has these days is that it's cheap. It doesn't cast nearly as well, it's thick for its strength, it comes off the reel in coils and tangles easily, it's more visible to fish, and it degrades in sunlight. |

10 lb braided line with 4-6 flouro leader. Can go slightly up or down depending on size of trout/ clarity of water/ and possible structure issues,
pretty much how I fish everything once I switched to braid. Universal knot for hooks/swivels and double uni for line-line. Bass? 20 lb braid with 8-10 flouro big cats/redfish? 40-60 lb braid with 20 lb flouro leader good luck! |
