Went out last week to a freshly harvested bean field. I pulled into the field with my lights off, but with the bright moon, my truck was pretty visible. I got out and set my gun on my tripod, and before grabbing my call to walk to my setup spot, I did a quick scan of the field. To my surprise, there was a coyote out hunting about 275-300 yards out. He starts working his way towards me, so I just followed him in the scope. As he was getting closer, I notice another coyote that was less than 100 yards away. I don't know how he never saw me. I shoot and he takes off. I take a shot at the second but missed. I go back to the first thinking he would have dropped by then. I miss him as he enters some tall brush, but then get another chance as he is moving through the brush. He dropped at that shot. After I found him, I noticed my first shot hit his front leg. The next day, I checked my zero, and found out my gun was shooting about 4-5" low. I started thinking back to my previous hunt from a few days before when I had my gun leaning up against my truck and accidentally bumped it. It fell and hit the ground pretty hard. It must have knocked it off zero. I guess I was lucky to get the one.![]() Coyote 10 4 25 Attached File Also my spectacular miss from last night. I had been working this coyote for about 40 minutes as he kept howling occasionally from the other side of the treeline. I saw him moving through the trees a few times. I was expecting him to come out of the tall grass as that's where they usually come out. He surprised me popping out less than 75 yards away. I got too excited and rushed the shot and pulled it just in frontof his chest. The last 3 were just desperation shots as he headed for the thick stuff. The last shot actually sounded like a hit to me, but didn't find anything. I'm still kind of kicking myself today about that one. ![]() Close range miss |
Selling your guns to a buyback because you feel criminals have too many firearms, is like getting yourself castrated because you feel the neighbors have too many children.
