I bought some different solar panels that have a slightly higher output. The price was too good to pass on. They are poly panels instead of mono, the big difference is they are less efficient which means they take up more space to produce the same amount of power. I also learned or relearned something about solar panels and inverters. The new panels are 72 cell panels instead of 60 cell panels like the original panels. It doesn't make much of a difference except for one specific setting, the open circuit voltage VOC. The more cells the higher the VOC and that voltage needs to be matched to your inverter or micro-inverter. The VOC of the panels is around 46V and my micro-inverters can handle up to 48v but with cold temperature the voltage of the panel increases and here it could get as high as 51V. I stopped upgrading my array once i learned that as too high of a voltage will fry the board or blow a capacitor on the micro-inverter. The biggest issue that I have with my solar is shading this time of year. The sun sits low in the horizon and the shadows are long. You can see the shadows of the trees on the first array. The trees might be 50-60ft tall and the array is roughly 80 feet away but the shadows as seen in the bottom picture extend way past that. Here is a good example of the snow reflection and power generation. Clean panels but cloudy with snow.  Power was about 50% what I get on a sunny day. If I had bifacial panels it would have produced up to 30% more power.  |

*sarcasm* This will be a fun year. The city demanded a 30 ft permanent easement and a 60 ft temporary easement for a new sewer line that they need to put in. I negotiated the best I could, knowing that they would use eminent domain to take it if need be. The project just kicked off, which I had no warning or insight of. The manager of the project called to meet with me to discuss somethings and mentioned they started clearing the easement. Usually neighbors are good at letting me know if anyone is down there but not this time. They have mostly clear cut the property like I expected them to but I had been hoping to get a big walnut tree log first. Then I find out they already crossed the boundaries of the temporary easement and destroyed all the cover for wildlife and foxes along the creek. My cameras didn't really capture anything, even looking at them know it is hard to tell because there are so many trees on the property and they are working on the back line of the property. This is a clear indication that I need to add even more cameras. Those deer are 100 feet away from the camera at 11 pm at night. You can see all the way back to the far tree line but there are trees and brush on the far side of the easement so I'm not sure when the crew actually came through cutting things down.  All the work done on the right should have been done on the left. The area to the right was supposed to stay brush to provide cover for wildlife to move along the creek. In the bottom callout there is a pink flag in the ground that denotes the boundary of the temp easement. It was also called out in the plans and marked with GPS coordinates.  |

I knew a 30 ft area was going to get clear cut. The temporary easement was supposed to go around a lot of the remaining brush but they completely ignored that. The back part of the property used to be this dense, really couldn't even walk through without moving branches and getting poked in the face by brush.  Now it looks like this.  Even the brush in the picture that I took last night is gone.

It’s time for more cameras, and perhaps more than just game cams. |

@prebans they do similar things around here too. Did they at least finishing paving the road when they were done? My county had to step in and finish the roads in multiple neighborhoods because the contractors didn't finish and then declared bankruptcy so they wouldn't have to fix anything. Those developers are all shady. This project is being done by city, under public scrutiny, and is being done by a very reputable company that mainly does government jobs. The general contractor can't control how the subcontractors behave. All they can do is make it right after the fact. As long as they don't destroy my bridge there isn't much else left that they can damage. |

@Kitties-with-Sigs It is getting to be that time of year ago. I have seeds for you try. Send me an address to mail them to. These are my top of the line seeds and I have extra. They came from a volunteer plant, that grew in the root zone of the small walnut tree pictured, grew in the shade, received no water all summer, the vine climbed the walnut tree and fruited. It was also a late season fruit, it had no blemishes, and it had a long shelf life. The only down size is the fruit was about the size of a large grape. Time to till up the walnut garden. This is where I added about 80 gallons of walnuts last fall. Those two trees are also walnut trees that I let grow last year. I feel bad for the yotes having to make it in decreasing habitat but for my foxes I'd be pulling out the suppressor. Germination not 100 percent, but damn near on your seeds. The late red had the lowest percentage HOWEVER my 2-3 seeds per cell is hardly scientific for stats. ETA: I wonder if that's what happened to Fionna? |

They are pushing back into cities because pets and garbage are easy meals. That's interesting that the seeds from the red/ripe tomatoes had lower germination than seeds from the green tomatoes. I never expect 100% germination on anything, especially with my crude method of seed collection. The green tomato seeds I let sit too long in the water that removes the coating on them and some of them started to sprout. It confirmed they were viable but I figured it might have hurt the germination rate. Apparently not. I took the ones that had germinated and put them in walnut soil that I had previously collected. They grew just fine. I transplanted from their little cell into a larger pot that is 100% walnuts, walnut leaves, and walnut leaf stems that I had I piled up last year. Here is what they look like now. These plants are from the green seeds.

I don't know how much documentation you would need. It would be a niche customer base but that's not a bad thing. I have a contact with Brad at Wild Boar Farms in California. He breeds exotic tomatoes. At least half of the tomatoes in that photo I sent you of my tomatoes just germinated--are Brad's. He might be a useful contact in saying what you need to do to have your tomatoes be viable and what would be involved. Do you have any seeds left? I have all sorts of seeds left. The green ones are mostly gone but I have plenty from earlier tomatoes. How are mine, both red and green, growing compared the rest? Are you growing faster or about the same? Both of these are greens. The top was accidental germination when cleaning. The bottom is what I planted shortly before sending you seed. The top is in 100% walnut material, no really even dirt. The bottom is in good potting soil. I'm thinking to putting my greens as the only variety in my main garden and giving them proper care for the first time in 8 years, just to see how and what they do. There are so many volunteers in the test best I think I will just transplant them to space them out and see what they do on their own as well.   |

All of your plants are doing great. I think there was ONE seed that did not germinate out of that little row I planted (mostly 2 seeds per cell) They've been potted up for a while and most of them are doing very well. I'll try to get pictures and text you here in a bit. The weather is not being nice. I'm trying to harden off the tomato plants and it's turned off cold again.

Here is one of the experiments I'm running this year. A 5 gallon bucket full of walnut materials from last year. It has several walnut trees that sprouted this spring. The tomato going into is one I showed earlier that grew in a small pot of walnut leaves and debris. There is no dirt involved anywhere. Just pure walnut materials smashed into pots and buckets.  This is a good shot of the walnut materials this tomato has grown in. The stick like things are the main stems of the leaves. There is walnut husks, shells, and nuts in it.  |

Subsonic .22 isn't exactly fast but isn't slow either. Those were listed at 1060 fps. The camera is an 8mp Reolink CX810 running at 25 fps and I-frame interval at 1x at set to a constant bit rate. It has white spotlights on it set to 100%. It has good specs all the way around but I didn't not expect to catch the bullet flight/path. |

Mine are all in the ground. Most have cages and they all need mulch. The walnut/tomato jungle is going strong. I reached out directly to the research team at the University of Kentucky about it and heard nothing back. I have one more avenue to try with them. I doubt it is a serious enough problem that they want to deal with it. But an official response would be nice. Have not seen any coyotes back up by the house yet. |

Said he was coming to ask if I wanted him to spray the driveway (yes it's weedy). NO. I didn't. I love him and he would do anything for us. Has helped us more times than I can count. But I'm not in a great frame of mind and have no idea whether there will be any garden at all between him and the farmer across the road. Your tomatoes have small fruits and (now) zero leaves.

Dang, that is terrible. Do the people not see the drift as it happens? I use various chemicals for the sidewalks and driveways, the grass and plants a foot away live and are fine because I watch where the spray goes. Can you rinse any of the chemicals off the plants and herbs you wanted or do you considered them contaminated no matter what now? That aspect would piss me off the most. My tomato plants were just a test and don't really matter. But stuff you were growing chemical free for your own health, that matters. |

First, these guys are in air conditioned cabins with a boom that is about 40 feet wide and they see nothing. Even with anhydrous escaping in big puffy plume-like clouds when the nozzles are not calibrated right, they just keep going. Playing on their phones while the satellites control their tractors. There is no way to use the plants for medicine after they have been touched by the chems. I would eat the food the plants produce if they produce anything. We will see. I have cut back some of the tomatoes and hoping they hadn't moved the poison that far downward before I cut them back. We will see. Drift is usually invisible. It happens after you're done spraying. Sometimes with a temperature inversion, the drift goes up, WAY up, then floats across what I call a thermocline (that's in water and involves human scent from a body on the bottom, but the idea is the same. I just don't remember what to call temperature layers in air. Maybe it's the same name. Anyway..it's a LAYER where the temperature changes in a pronounced way) Okay so the drift goes up a few feet or hundreds of feet cuz it's riding on warmer air where you don't think warmer air would be. And then it travels horizontally. Maybe feet. maybe miles. And then it drops. BAM. Onto something. And it kills that thing it dropped upon. Drift is evil. |

| Is the drift due to fine mist particles floating away during the spraying process or is the chemical partially evaporating and floating off the plants? I must set the nozzle on my sprayer to be a heavier stream. I put the year long vegetation killer, only works for about 2 months, on that brick path in front of the house. It might kill a couple inches of grass beyond it when I get sloppy but that's the worst of it. Chemicals are expensive and I don't want to kill other things. Guess those aren't concerns for everyone. |

This picture says it all about tomato in walnut soil project. That tree is a 12 ft tall black walnut. The tomato plant is a volunteer that germinated in the root zone of the walnut tree. It flowered and has now produced fruit. In addition to being the root zone that garden bed has been loaded up with walnuts in their husks every fall for the last 3 years. I've reached out to various entities but gotten no real interest back. I emailed one more person at UK who works as an Extension rep. He seems to specialize in smaller crops in Kentucky. Hopefully he responds back indicating if there is any value in the project.  |
