My new job is going to require me to be "on the road" every other week. What I want to do is remote operated my FT-950 using HRD, Signalink as a sound card interface and Skype as the ViOP access. Anyone doing this and what issues am I looking to avoid. I already have all the hardware it's just a matter of proper configuration of HRD on both the Host and Client computers, been using HRD for years but not in this fashion. Get my Signalink up and running on the 950 then getting Skype accounts for both computers and configuring that correctly.
Ok what am I forgeting/haven't I thought about?
THANKS!!

Been there, done that. The biggest issue is network latency. You will need cooperative QSOs because it can take 2 or 3 seconds to transition between TX and RX states in both directions. That doesn't sound like much but it's an eternity.

What are you planning to use on the client side for speaker/microphone? I've had good luck with a Microsoft Lifechat USB headset.

Also, I preferred leaving HRD running on the host computer and merely RDP'ing in. It seemed more stable and it was certainly lighter weight for the client.

I assume you are GTG with all the networking/router stuff?

I have a headset that was used for a interface on my 2m rig that I'm no longer using, it should do well. Network/router stuff should be GTG I'm using it throughtout the house now. Only thing you mentioned I didn't understand was RPD'ing? I'm planning on using HRD on both the host and the client. I've got my Signalink hooked up but apparently something isn't right I'm not getting the waterfall? I'll have to spend some time tomorrow and try to get everything running correctly, once I get the digital working then I'll start setting other things up.Don't think I'll be on the road for at least a week so I have time to play.

RDP is Remote Desktop Protocol, or just simply "Remote Desktop". It is in-built feature of most versions of Windows since XP. It allows remote access to a PC from another PC. Faster and more efficient than pretty much any other similar solution, such as the web-based type stuff like GoToMyPC or the cross platform VNC.

OK. But my MAJOR problem now is after setting up HRD on the desktop, NO FIRE WALL, and setting up the laptop the desktop "refuses" to accept a connection from the laptop? Tried re-setting everything in HRD on both the host and the client with no sucess. Tried my IP to start with and ended up going to "NO-IP" just to be sure I'm not running a dynamic IP. Still no-go! Haven't even gotten to the point of downloading and installing Skype yet! Need the 2 computers to "talk" to each other first!
I'm stumped at this point.

Best to set your radio server up for a static IP on your network, first. No reason to go "no IP", that is always fraught with peril (not even sure it will work).

After that, hmmm, it could be anything from A to Z. What OS are you running on each computer? Can you ping the desktop from the laptop? Have you tried making an RDP connection (assuming your OS's support, there are some limitations––see this link)? You can also try installing VNC on both computers and making a connection that way. If you can ping and make some other kind of connection such as those then we know it's not a network or firewall problem and can concentrate on HRD setup issues.
