nice buck and nice picture. my boy refused to pose for a pic like that. he's 4 and has an issue getting his hands dirty. one of these days i'll have to break him of that.

Took this 6 pointer the first day out. The road had ripped a bolt off my front control arm on the truck and the ensuing wobbled cause the exhaust to fall off. Wasn't really in the mood to hang around forever. There were 5 does in a little group across this canyon I was watching. My son thought that the does were looking to our 8 o'clock; lo an behold this guy was standing there. I maneuvered around his right flank, crouched into a good kneeling position and shot him from about 100 yards away. He walked about 10 feet, fell over and died within 5 minutes. I shot him with a 168 gr Hornady TAP in .308 out of 26" Remington 700 bull barrel with a Leupold Mark VII. This was the first solo hunt for my son and I. He helped out a lot on the butchering. I think we got about 125 pounds of meat. Cooking one of the roasts in my Dutch Oven Bean Hole tomorrow. Maybe I'll add some pics after the meal is cooked. Does anyone have a good recipe for a European mount? |

Left the Keys and headed up to North Central Florida for opening day of Firearm Buck Season on November 5. My stepson’s have a nice 25 acre chunk of land that is located in a travel corridor.
The AM hunt was uneventful with the exception of an army of squirrels who kept me entertained rather than falling asleep in the tree stand. We left the woods for some lunch and returned about 4 PM for the evening hunt. Just before the end of shooting time I caught some motion down the trail from me at 50 yards or so. It was a deer moving out into the small opening on the trail. I instantly scoped the head and saw enough horn to put the crosshairs just behind his shoulder and squeezed one off. The deer actually ran towards me about 35 yards and dropped. This is the first year I decided to hunt with my AR-15. I shot some hand loads that I brewed up. I used Sierra Game King Bullets in the 65 grain size over 22.2 grains of H322. The bullet did its job and destroyed the interior of the deer while exiting under the hide on the ‘passenger’ side. I recovered the bullet and found that it retained 71% or 46 grains of the original weight. This load is exactly what I had wished for in that it expended all of its energy in the deer and did not punch a hole through. The end diameter mushroomed to .420 at the widest point. The deer is actually a 6 point as the “crab claw” on the right main beam does not count as a point as it is less than 1” in length. I green scored it and was surprised it scored 109 3/4”. Not bad for a Florida deer! So here he is. Enjoy.

First gun opener first buck. I walked up on this guy about 30 yds. away. I was on a slight ridge he was below out of the wind. 30-06 did the trick.

This has been an odd season here in Indiana. Not seeing as many deer as I normally do. I decided that meat was more important than "bone" so I took a little crab-claw 5 point this evening. I took him with my CVA Wolf using Barnes Spit-Fire TMZ bullets. He was standing broadside at about 85 yards just staring at me. His mistake!

Probably tasty too... 6 pointer I didn't get out until yesterday morning. He walked by me in the morning; he was at my 4 o'clock, I wasn't about to take a "Texas heart shot," as that's what he'd left me with by the time I got turned to face him. He slowly disappeared into the brush with no clear shot. After going in for breakfast, I went back to the same spot. He came from another side approaching a scrape line. I needed some meat in the freezer, so I sent him an invitation in the form of a 140 gr Barnes TSX. That 7mm-08 is rather persuasive. 
I definately made sure he was in no condition to make an escape with my rifle mounted, before I took the pic. |

Just got back from this years hunt. I once again went to Nebraska and hunted on a 6,000 acre ranch owned by a family friend in the Sandhills of Northwestern Nebraska.
This was the first time my wife has ever hunted Deer, she did a great job, she killed, gutted and skinned the Deer herself, my brother did most of the processing for her, while showing where to cut, etc: She shot the deer in the rear leg and then the neck. (In Nebraska a male deer with spikes less then 6inches is considered antlerless) 
How much damage does the 7.62x39 with SP ammo do? This is were the ball end of the leg bone should be. 
My Deer. I took my shots with the deer on the run, first one cripled the front leg, second hit was a shot at the rump as she tried to run up a draw, that put her down but not out. Took a long while to die even after cutting the throat. 
Both of us used a Sig556R with a YHM 7.62 SS suppressor mounted. Optic was a millet 1-4 circle dot. Ammo was S&B 123gr SP |

My first deer ever! She's a bit small but it was the only deer I saw all day here on opening day of gun season in Alabama. 72 lbs after being field dressed.

My six and my dad's ten. I took the six on a patch of land that has had deer taken off it by my father, uncles, grandfather and grand uncles for over 50 years. Felt good. |

Congratulations to everyone! Those are some great-looking deer, and will be some good eating. I used my last tag on November 10, so I'll have to get my excitement from this thread until next season.
