Just out of morbid curiosity.... Given, you have one long gun, a lever action rifle. Caliber is unimportant. You are going out into the wilds for a week or two, not planning on recreational shooting, but predators are somewhat around, as well as nuisance game like coyote. Not really a hunting trip, just getting the heck out of Dodge for a bit. How much ammo do you pack? I was taking a rifle on a trip once where I wasn't planning on doing any real shooting, and realized I had packed about 200 rounds. I am also liking my Heritage/Rossi 357 Mag lever gun for a lot of multipurpose things, so, just throwing that out there. |

Question is kind of vague . "out into the wilds" What does that mean? Scooting out some trails with your pickup and pitching a tent alongside it is one answer and hiking in 20 miles with a pack on your back is something else altogether. I like the pistol caliber lever but sometimes just a 22 pistol or rifle wins the day just because the ammo is so light |

with POTUS Trump? my 336 with a full tube, butt stock holds 6 more and 2 boxes in my kit. around 50 rounds. my .22 with 4 mags and 100 rds in my kit, I have seen the documentaries of The Hills and their eyes. with POTUS BIDEN? AR, full kit with 6 mags and 10 more in my pack, 1911 sidearm and 4 spare mags with 50 rounds in my kit., also suggest the same load out for getting coffee in LA, NOLA, Boston, Chitown and Houston. |

Having wondered into someone's pot field when I was a young man, i carry enough ammo to break contact and get out of dodge. It would either be my 30-30 or .357. Probably my 1911 in .45 but maybe my 686+ if I'm carrying my Henry .357. If it's my 30-30, 6 rounds in it and 40 extra rounds, plus my 1911 with (3) 10 rnd reloads, (39 rnds of .45). Probably 20 rnds 150 gr HP and 20 rnds 170 gr SP because those are what I stock. My .357 would be 7 plus 50 extra rounds, my 686+ and a couple speed loaders (21 rnds). They'd be a mix of Leverlution, heavy soft points and Fed HST in my 686, again because that's what I have. That being said, I generally carry an AR in the woods and a handgun. The biggest thing we have are black bears. |
What's in the tube & an extra box of ammo is sufficient until bright flashes followed by loud booms coming from the directions of cities & bases, then you realize there's not going to be resupply waiting at home that's replaced with a mushroom cloud

My pioneer mountain trip in central Idaho. I was out for 5 days in a area with bears and wolves. Fmj in the 9mm 17 round mag, bear spray and a .22 lr with 2 , 10 round mags. I did around 30 miles at elevation range between 7.5k-11,000. Weight is a factor at that elevation. Attached File Attached File Attached File |
| I've hiked with as little as 5 in the cylinder and a single reload in a strip (S&W 340 airweight) to as much as a couple hundred .223 rounds if I thought I might be doing a bit of recreational shooting. I do recall a multi day hike with a 1911 and a full mag inside it. So 8 rounds at the low end. Car camping.. oops... overlanding is limited by cargo capacity. |

I'd probably not be on foot. I'd either have a truck close by or a side by side to haul stuff. With hauling capacity I'd probably have hundred rounds of levergun ammo, or ten spare mags of semi auto pistol/rifle ammo. |

Full Load in the gun and a box of whatever Roy ds you use for it in the pack. Leverguns make great “rambling” guns. One of my personal favorites is a Savage 99 in 308 that has been parkerized and the stock coated in a few layers of black crinkle marine paint. XS ghost ring sights and a Luepold Scout Scope. 5 rounds in the gun and 5 more on the butt cuff and a box in the pack. Sometimes I’ll leave the pack when I’m getting water, gathering wood or just checking g out the area and that leaves me with 10 in/on the gun plus my sidearm and 1-2 reloads. |

I've used and carried all of my ammo in a butt stock holder...and I stopped because I kept losing rounds. It held 10 and the gun held 5, so it was perfect. I had 2 full loads for the gun, however, several times I get back to the truck or my house and without shooting any rounds I would be down a round or two. Just from hiking around. I felt like it held the ammo pretty tight, but I eventually moved on from that approach. I now keep my 10 rounds in my extra pouch on my binocular harness/chest rig. 5 in the gun and a full reload. This just stays in my chest rig. If I were going to be out away from town on a hunting/hiking/whatever trip, I would take a full box. 10 on me and 10 in my pack. I would probably leave the extra 10 in the tent if I were camping and trekking out from the tent for the day. |

I think it depends on… - where you’re going? - what kind of possible run ins with animals or people? - how far will you be from a place to resupply wether truck or house? - how long will you be away from the truck or house? Part of the day, all day or multiple days? I just hunted for a week locally where I left early in the morning and returned to the truck each night. I was a couple miles from the truck at most. I carried a Marlin 44 mag with the chamber loaded and a full magazine tube. I also carried a Glock 20 with a 15 round mag and a spare mag in my pouch. We have coyotes, bear, bobcat and moose for what could be a possible threat animal as well as other people. I’ve had a bear come through my yard twice in the past three weeks and others have spotted some as well. Even if they’re hibernating you never know when you will stumble into a bear den and piss one off. If I was going to be gone for a multi day trip I would carry a loaded rifle and at minimum a spare 20 round ammo pouch. If weight wasn’t a big concern I’d probably also bring the G20 even if it was for night time protection when you’re not actively hunting. |

When I had my Glenfield 30-30, I carried it with the tube full (4 rds) and 10 cartridges in a belt pouch. This was for black bear season and we camped for 3 days. I also carried a Model 19 357 4 inch around camp and left the rifle locked in the truck. After a burglary reset my gun collection, I used a Mossberg MVP 308 Patrol and had one 10 rd mag in the rifle and 2 on my belt. If you are ranging far from base camp, 10 to 20 rounds should be fine. |

My hunting loadout that does not include recreational shooting: Bolt action rifle. One round chambered plus the mag holds three. One spare three round mag in my packs waste belt pouch. Ten extra rounds in a soft round holder my pack. 17 rounds. But that's for a 3~4 day hunting weekend a could miles from the truck sleeping in a tent. I have often shot a couple rounds and not re upped for the following weekend and was not worried about it. Hunting my back 40 or only for the day? I carry what the gun holds plus on spare three round mag and don't usually carry my regular backwoods pack. Out with just a handgun often a 38sp with 5 in the gun and one spare speed loader so 10 for the day. Often bring the same when on a camping trip not during hunting season. Sometimes I put an extra box in the truck sometimes not. I don't lose sleep about it one way or another. Unless I am out doing recreational shooting I almost never carry both a rifle and handgun as I don't like to add the extra weight when hiking many miles per day. During muzzleloading season I carry 5, maybe 6 reloads? Can't have a cartridge gun with you in my AO when actively bow or muzzleloader hunting. When I have my crossbow, I carry 3 bolts but also bring one of these with a few bear rounds and flares. Insert any and every disclaimer you can think of here including don't, just don't, but a primer only should, in theory, be the equivalent of the black "Pest Scare Rounds", but anything else would likely be a fool's errand and risk your hand and anything else in the path of flying plastic. Don't, just don't. I forgot to answer the original question. I've carried my 16" Rossi 92 .357 on multiple trips across the country, which included some hiking, camping and backpacking. I carried the shells in the gun and a spare reload when carrying the gun, there was a box of shells in the truck. |
