| Just wondering....of all the equipment you take into the field, does that include a first aid/trauma kit? It seems to me that gear is filed under "I hope I never need it, but glad i have it if/when disaster strikes." |
| I have an IFAK and a booboo pouch with added steri-strips in all of my outdoor gear (hiking / hunting / range / ski packs) and a larger trauma kit in all of my vehicles. Hope to never need any of it. Same feeling as with smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and air bags. |

I carry a basic boo boo kit and then have a pouch with compressed gauze, quick clots, an Izzy, shears, TQ, tape and some other stuff. I had to use the big one once when I was gutting a deer in 2021. In a hurry to gut while pulling on the butt out I managed to run my hand into the knife i was holding in my other hand and had some pretty good arterial bleeding. Probably squirts of at least a foot. Probably 1/4" of the knife tip came out of my palm. Fortunately the blade edge was facing the back of my hand otherwise I would have completely split the webbing between my thumb and index finger. Quick clot granules burn but they work. I had to jam it in with my fingers at first because the blood was pushing them out. Then the gauze and Izzy wrapped as tight as I could with one hand. Couple hours in an ER and 7 stitches. It was fun getting all those granules scrubbed out. I'm much more careful when gutting a deer now. I also carry the quick clot gauze now too. |

Buddy, ditch the granules and get combat gauze or similar. Less burn, easier to clean. Pro tip, easier to pack the wound if you throw a TQ on first. Once dressed you can slowly loosen and remove the TQ, if appropriate. |
