Been a couple years since I visited this part of the forums but looking for some suggestions. As stated in the subject zone 6 growing area. Not looking to have to irrigate often in the summer due to having a well. Just had a Sweetgum removed due to it only having about 70% of the foliage, might have been a disease (pic 2, obscured by the ornamental grass around the light pole and that Bradford Pear). Also had a large Honey Locust removed because it was shading out an Oak, a younger Maple, and some pines. The grass is pretty stressed and brown where the Jeep and trailer is because of the equipment and cleanup from the tree company working in the yard. Watering it currently to try to help it rebound from the traffic. Also had some rain every day for about a week prior so the lawn is showing some signs of leaf spot (fungal issues/browning patches) but it will bounce back. Looking for recommendations on a grass seed that will blend with existing lawn. The first two pics are the main areas I want to seed now. The second pic also shows where a pine was removed from edge of the driveway on the left near the ground mount transformer is. That area gets about 7 hours of sun. Currently putting down some top soil to fill in where the stumps and roots were ground out. These areas see about 10-12 hours of sun this time of the year, except for the area near the transformer that gets about 7 hours of direct sun. I realize in the short term I will need to throw the water to these seeded areas for this season to get them established. Also plan to aerate the crap out of the lawn and overseed in the fall in the front yard (pic 1 and 2). Currently looking at a mix of tall fescue and bluegrass blend which I might need to blend the seed myself do to availability in my area. The third pic is of the back yard I decided to throw in.....

Your lawn looks great! Do you know what grasses you have currently? Personally, I would use tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass as well. Some folks would put in ryegrass for quick growing this season, but I would wait until September at this point to seed. If it's a small spot then a good watering schedule should be ok. |

Zone 6 covers a LOT of area and vastly different climates. All the zone means really is first and last frost dates. That looks like fescue you are growing and it looks very good based on what you've said. You've had a lot of compaction. I would consider ways to help that, and aeration is one good choice. Tell me sort of where you are, and any specific questions and I will see if I can help? The bluegrass may or may not be a good idea depending on where you are. ~Kitties |
