Gents,

I've scoured the NWS website, and it's simply not easy to use. I've checked out Google, and I can't find a good listing of wind data for my area.

Can anyone help me find a good listing of average wind speeds by zip, or something similar? I'd love to review data that went back a couple of years, at the least.

This is to help plan a windmill.

I used a weather data service for a case I worked a while back, let me dig up the info...

They do sell the data, but it's not terribly expensive if I remember correctly. If you call them on the phone, they'll be able to tell you whether they have data in the format you want, and if they do, you'll be able to pay with a card and they'll email a spreadsheet to you. Will probably be able to see how it varies by season, and maybe even time of day. Pretty slick deal. Would be nice if free, but you've seen how disorganized free is.

Not sure what you are really looking for, but I found this.

Those were both very helpful too. Checked the two nearest stations to the area in question and it appears there is an average of 6-10mph winds around there.

There are a few .gov sites that also can point to some good data:
