Had that happen to me also

I used long reach pliers to put the vent back on

I think I used something like this but I might have used my pliers with the circular "hose grip" jaws

The can lids are a thicker gasket, and appear to be the same as the replacements I purchased (at the same time I ordered the cans, 10+ years ago.)

The gasket channels in both my spouts are much shallower, and the cracked gasket I removed from the first spout is less than 1/2 the thickness of the gasket used in the can lid.  One of these spouts came from Atlantic British, when I bought the cans.

I bought a set of spare gaskets from Atlantic-British/Rover Parts a few years ago. The label says they are made in China, but they seem to be good quality. I haven’t used any of them yet though.  The spare gaskets do seem kind of thick, but I haven’t removed an original gasket from the can or the spout for comparison, as the gaskets on my cans and the spout both work fine. I guess I should do that.

Take a look at the McMaster-Carr link. There are various thicknesses of gasket material available, in sheets, strips, or disks. You would need to trace a gasket shape and then cut the material. The compressible Buna-N material looks like it would work, but I’m not an expert.

ETA: My fuel cans and spout were also purchased from Atlantic-British/Rover Parts.

New to NATO style cans… I just bought 4 brand new Wavians. Is there anything I should know or do before I do the first fill?

One simple thing from my experience, make sure the gasket is sitting properly from the factory, Just a quick visual inspection when you fill it is all it takes, I had one the gasket wasn't sitting right first fill, just needed to reposition it and it hasn't been an issue since...that was 5 or 6 years ago

At Coleman’s Surplus - read the description carefully: sold as is, no returns or refunds - they claim that these cans have not been used; old stock NATO cans dated from the 1950s. https://colemans.com/nato-military-jerry-can

ETA (5/09/2026): Currently out of stock. Sign-up for email notification is available for when it comes is back in stock, if that ever happens.

ETA2 (5/24/2026): They have been back in stock since about a week ago.

seems to be a lot of new scepter style fuel jug availability on ebay and surplus sites and "supply core"? seems to be a licensed US version of it, though you can tell the molds are slightly different, minor differences in the sprues and handles. same basic form factor and the vent tube is also a little different.

Anyone have a lead for replacement cap and flange for the plastic USGI gas can?     I've found it on eBay/JAGMTE, but I might as well got find a can locally... But would prefer not to buy another can.

Attached File

$14 for cap and $13 for shipping, without the flange...

How does the JAGMTE fuel spout for Scepter fuel cans compare to the Scepter OEM military fuel can spout?

The Scepter OEM spout covers the external threads on the can so I suppose that helps to protect the can threads.  Is there any other difference, other than the Scepter OEM spouts are hard to find and expensive in the USA?

What is the best available (in the USA) fuel can spout for Scepter gas cans?

The JAGMTE website shows many useful items for fuel and water cans.  Is their quality good?

Thanks for the help.

I built that style out of some fittings from the plumbing aisle at tractor supply. I’ve been using it for years because I’m too cheap to buy the one that threads external, but never really been happy with it. The internal threads are much finer easier to cross thread and just doesn’t seem like a great idea in general.

I've not used the actual scepter one. When i was in the military we still had the old school compression lock donkey dicks that have the big rubber gasket, you would just shove it in the hole and throw the lever and it would expand and seal.

I have used the jagmte and one that i cobbled together and they both can be a little annoying to start, the nice thing is the jagmte has a beefy viton oring to seal with.

The threads of the jug are 2" NPS, but most people end up using a 2" NPT adapter which is tapered and is not ideal. Even the JAGTME one is tapered. The scepter threads are straight walled not tapered. I made a custom 2" NPS thread profile in solidworks and then made a spout flange for it and it threads on far superior to the either the jagtme or the one i cobbled together. I suspect the scepter one is probably similarly better since its engineered for their product.

On the new supplycore cans  that have been showing up(they are  basically identical to scepter, it must have been licensed off) i can flick my it with my finger and have it spin smoothly all the way down till it bottoms out against the oring. My scepter cans, 4 of which i bought new are quite a bit tighter but the engagement quality is still way better than the cobble it together solution. I don't  know if its cuz the supplycore molds are newer or what, theyve been making scepters for decades. I'm just a sample size of one but the supply core ones seem to have more consistent thread tolerance.

Best place on this type Scepter fuel jug for after market vent ?

I collect all different types of gas jugs off of Facebook marketplace when the price is right.
And this style Scepter jug I hate with a passion, but when they are only $5 or free I snatch them up.
Ive looked on google images and searched at what others do for a vent location.
But what say the hive here.
The grip handle area has not worked good for me, and I’ve studied and measured the characteristics of the can when it’s full and as I’m pouring. Using this area I can’t fill the jug to capacity and lose about 1/2 gallon to a 1/4 gallon capacity so as not to fill past the vent area. Has anyone found a better area besides the handle to place a vent ?

Has anybody patched a hole in a Scepter USGI Water can?

This would be for a hole in the body itself.  Not a cap, spout, threads issue.

I got a couple for free and weighing the decision to try to patch or just toss them.

Thanks.

Maybe try plastic welding it?

MWC are pretty cheap all things considered. I’d toss it.

Any suggestions on where to pick up the 10L metal jerry cans? The big cans are a pain for my wife to move so I'd like to get some smaller ones for a quick grab.
