I have a few Digital Ham Radio Questions:
1. Is there much activity (digital) on UHF/VHF other than APRS - Can or does it make any sense to use a repeater to send/receive digital other than APRS? 2. Can I send/receive digtal using a HT and a computer sound card (ie VX-7r + Regular sound card with mic in and sprk out)? Do I have to have a TNC? - Would I need to enable VOX in order to be able to send? - What programs are recommended to do this? 3. I saw a post a few days ago regarding WinLink 2000 (email over HF/UHF/VHF)....I would be interested in using the winmor software ... does anyone have any experience doing this on UHF/VHF if there is a "listening" station near me? |

We have P25 digital repeaters around here for regular voice. 2. Can I send/receive digtal using a HT and a computer sound card (ie VX-7r + Regular sound card with mic in and sprk out)? I've only used my HT for APRS though. 3. I haven't played with WinLink in quite a while. I really need to check the installation again. |

I haven't heard any packet here in AZ other than APRS. It's really a bummer cuz' I used to connect to the DX cluster back in the 90's and had a ball chasing DX. I ended up selling off my old PK88 a few years ago at the local hamfest. I also miss the PBBS and mailbox built into the TNC's. There is a program, Multipsk, that will act as a TNC with a soundcard, but I have yet to use it.
Interfacing it with a HT is dependant on the HT. If you have VOX capability, then that would be the quick and dirty way. You may have to adjust the TXD in the software to compensate for the delayed keyup. Where in AZ are you? I would like to see if I can get Multipsk to work. Maybe we can connect if you are close enough. |

The Winmor software* is for passing Winlink 2000 messages on the HF bands, not for VHF/UHF. Basically, it's for sending messages over the long haul, not for local packet traffic. However, the Winlink system is capable of using VHF/UHF packet to deliver messages locally. (To get some idea of whether or not there's any Winlink local activity in your area, click here to see a list of VHF/UHF stations which have been passing Winlink traffic within the last few hours). *Also, the Winmor software is still just in the testing phase - Nobody's using it on the Winlink network to pass messages yet. Hopefully, that will change as soon as most of the bugs are ironed out. |
