Is not considered CW for HF privileges for Techs correct?

Would like to test a radio but still studying for the General.

I'm not sure what you are asking.

Is using a computer to sent CW legit if you are only authorized CW on a freq? I would think so. It's not manual, hand hammered CW.... but...it's CW.

there are portions on 80, 40, and 15 you can use as a tech, doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you stay where you are licensed and you send CW.

ETA: think of it this way, the means dont matter, if you were disabled and wanted to use radio you would use a computer why would they stop you based on input method? its all about where you broadcast, amount of power and mode.

Got it, I would be using DM780 and my signalink USB, and since that is not actually keying but sending tones it seems that is a combo of digital mode/cw.   DM780 reads computer generated cw well.  Anyhow this will allow me to test a new radio till I get my ticket and can do some psk.

DM780 is also a good way to practice CW.  Just make sure the "Break-In" on the radio is turned to OFF.  Now you can use a set of paddles (or bug) to practice and see DM780 decode what you would actually be sending if the "Break-In" was turned ON.  With the RF gain turned all the way down on the radio, the only sounds you hear are the tones generated by the radios keyer.  I used this method to practice CW with my IC-703 before I got my General and still use it for practice.

DM780 works great from PC to PC, or a good keyer. But PC to straight key? Hit and miss.

If you've got everything set up, and would like to try, post in this thread and we'll see what we can do. I'm always up for playing.

If the radio mode switch is in CW, you're not sending any tones.

AFAIK what mode switch the radio is set to is irrelvant;  what matters is the signal that is emitted by the station.  If it's a clean CW signal it's irrelevant how it is generated.

In the past I've heard some crazy myths about novice/tech CW privileges, such as that techs were prohibited from transmitting faster than 5wpm.  I think the reason we don't see more technicians pushing the envelope is that it's so easy to get a General license, if anyone is so inclined to get on HF.

CW is a transmission 'mode'...not a sound. Continuous Wave is a pulse mode, controlled by off and on inputs to the carrier wave - in most communications. Each oscillation is identical. Therefore, there can be no variation in amplitude frequency or phase as this would imply modulation.

Depending on if your radio is set to CW mode, and the frequency you are transmitting on, (with regards to what is authorized for your ticket), you may well be using an unauthorized mode for your band priviledges. (I ain't tellin' )

Sound card modes are gennerally 'modulation' modes, no matter if you are modulating frequency or amplitude, shifting phase, etc.

Technically, just because it 'sounds' like CW - doesn't neccessarily make it CW.

Just learn CW and forget about all this other stuff.

G4FON is good.  I also like lcwo.net

A pure sine wave tone transmitted via SSB would be an unmodulated carrier.

Some transceivers actually generate CW this way IIRC.
