This past year I lost access to 3500 acres of prime hunting land, bought up by a developer after the courts ordered the sale of the property which had been in a Trust for years. Some family wanted the cash, others did not. Most of the land was on one side of the Interstate with several hundred on the other. When I wanted deer, I hunted the smaller parcel so as to let the herd recover from previous over hunting. This smaller parcel was next to a highly regulated management area and holds plenty of deer and mature bucks. Fortunately my connection to the property that sold owned 350 acres that was not part of the sale, that property happens to be the main part of the ranch I hunted when I was after deer. I had a self-imposed moratorium on killing deer in this area (the larger parcel) for about five years and just started killing deer on this side three years ago... the result, nicer mature deer. Saturday morning I got this nice 8-pt at about 75 yards...  Later that day I set up for the afternoon hunt and got this nice 9-pt. I saw him a couple hundred yards away and he did not seem to want to move. After watching him for almost an hour, and realizing it was going to be dark soon, I carefully climbed down out of my stand only moving when his head was down. Grass was knee high so it wasn't difficult. I crawled about 100 yards until I got a oak/palm clump between us then got to my feet and closed the distance. I slowly worked the edge of the clump until I could see him, he was about 100 yards. When he turned away to scratch, I stepped out, took a good kneeling position, I fired. He dropped in his tracks. Glad I took the chance and went after him.  Not sure how much longer I'll have access to this property and I know there are others like these out there. Going to make the best of the time I have which could be months or years. |
