Any idea what's going here?  Just rot from dampness perhaps?  These are the lowest layer of leaves and actually once I pinched them off, the plants seem to be doing better.

I don't know what caused that problem, but ... watch for stinkbugs.  I almost lost all my butternuts to them.  If you begin to see yellow leaves, look for the bugs.

Been reading the interwebz for information about how to kill them.

Apparently, they are worse in the Northern states.

I am now spraying twice per day, to apply Liquid Sevin directly on any eggs or bugs I see.  It does not appear to kill them, but, I have seen the number of adults drop off, and the plants are putting on new growth and fruits.

My butternuts are recovering, and producing some fair sized fruits, but, if I had recognized the signs at the outset... well, I would be harvesting by the bushel instead of 8 total fruits.

Watch yours like a hawk.

I heard about a guy that had a butternut problem. He was dating this girl from Frisco and tried to make love to her, butternut got in the way.

Most likely Angular Leaf Spot.  My pumpkin plants have the same thing.  It is due to the wet weather we have been having.  You need to spray your plants with something containing copper.  Spray it every week too.  That way it will be contained.  Try finding some Bonide Copper Fungicide Dust or Spray.  That should help you.

I'm using a spray I picked up at True Value Hardware.  It contains pyrethryins and seems to be working.  Vine borers are also a problem for me.  I have to cut the vine open and squish the little magot.

Me too!

Stink bugs are bad up here. Freaking everywhere. I may be blessed in that I haven't seen many at my place (just jinxed myself), but Japanese beetles and cabbage bugs are bad. I have been spraying with sevin, may increase the frequency now that my lettuce has begun to bolt.

I am still battling mine.  The butternuts have returned, and it looks like I will have 6-8 to harvest.
