| Reason I’m asking is this: brother and I were on 14 ft Jon boat on my 4 acre pond. About half way out, a lizard jumps out of said boat. Told brother, that lizard isn’t making it 10 seconds and started counting.....10, 9, 8, 7, big hit on lizard...gone....lizard was maybe 3 inches....anyone here use them? If so, how do you hook them? Stowaway dealt with like a stowaway. |

We call them lizards, too.
They are salamanders, at least in WV. We'd walk up a creek, rolling over rocks/old logs/stumps near the water. Not in the water, but on the bank where it was damp, but not in the water. They are fast as hell, and slippery as hell, too. You've got to be quick and you've got to learn to pick them up/hold them till you get them to the minnow bucket without killing/injuring them. The minnow bucket should have a few layers of moss (off the same old logs/stumps along the creek bank) in the bottom of the part with the drain holes and lids. The lizards don't need or like to be submerged for long, but they need to able to stay wet. While fishing, you need to pull the center (part of the minnow bucket with drain holes) out of the bucket part and dunk it in the water every so often before putting it back in the bucket part. Heat isn't good for them either. Summer sun on the bucket will cook them. We had three colors of them. Almost black, greenish tint and every now and then you'd see one with a brownish tint to it. All of them worked. Anything from 3 or 4" up to 6 or 7" (7" is a big one up in those creeks.) To hook them you've got to get them between the legs, just behind the legs. Too far down the tail and tail will just pull off, too far up and you mess up the back legs and they can't swim right. Lizards, when the small mouth bass are hitting lizards, can't be beat. We've been fishing on Meadow River and Greenbrier River (either one, they are miles apart, so you WV guys don't jump on me for putting both of them in the same sentence) with Mepps #2 spinners and/or Tiny Torpedoes and the bass would just stop hitting. Neither would work. Stop, grab the other rod/reel, put a lizard on it and toss it out and BANG! you're catching fish again, till you run out of lizards or they start hitting the lures again. Just hook them, a split shot or two on the line a foot or so up from the hook, toss them out and let them start swimming. The only time we ever tried to use them down here in VA my brother caught/brought some down from home. We went over to the Chicahominy River, dropped the bucket into the water to get them wet, drained the excess water out, dropped the center back into the bucket and 10 minutes later they were all dead. No idea what killed them. Never tried it again. And yes, the plastic lizards work. I like them Carolina rigged so the lizard has more room to move around behind the weight. |
