Caveat: I had to give up my membership and lost access to Team, Board, saved stuff - so this is a dumb repeat question. Anyone been successful with this approach? If yes, what age did you start? |

Depends on what you're looking to get out of the program, and why Boy Scouts is not acceptable. Are you going to actually participate and be a leader? Or are you just looking for which one to drop your kids off at? From what I can see, APC is not designed as a youth program for kids, although kids can participate as long as parents are there too. And if your gripe with scouts is that they let in gay people and girls, APC probably isn't your program, either. Trail Life is a growing scout-like organization that is boys only. If you're looking for a scout alternative for your son, that's probably your best bet. It is solidly Christian-religious based, so if that offends you don't even bother looking at that one. There is no doubt that scouting has shot itself in the foot bad, multiple times, and seems to keep doubling down on stupidity. Having said that, in my experience the statements and public positions of the national Scout organization is not reflected by most of the local troops. The 20-some boys in our troop are having largely the same experiences, and learning the same skills, (arguably better in both areas, sometimes) as anyone in the past. We don't have girls, and won't have girls, because our charter organization won't allow it. There is no "social justice" taught at any of the activities we've been to. It's still primarily about outdoor skills, leadership and citizenship, and for all its faults I don't think there are ANY youth programs that teach those topics better. Trail Life might, but I'm not familiar with the citizenship/leadership aspects of their program. I know they do the outdoor skills part. Most of the people I've seen complaining about "scouts nowadays" are forming their opinions solely off what they've seen on TV or the internet. I've spent two weeks at two different scout camps this summer. I'm one of the most outspoken critics of a lot of their recent decisions, and quite frankly I'm a giant PITA to most scout executives, and I STILL walk around camp, seeing everything the hundreds of boys (and single single digits of girls) are doing and learning, and think about how much better society would be if more kids were in scouting. |

A big part of the reasoning behind it was to create a 'one stop shop' for families to be able to better fit Scouting into their busy schedules. Most activities are separate although some of the leadership roles overlap. Boy Scouts (Scouts BSA) has a much better base curriculum vs Girl Scouts - I've been involved in both. Scouting, along with most youth activities, are all in what you put into it in order to get out of it what you want. That is why I had been involved in many of my kids extracurricular activities. I have remained involved with Boy Scouts even after my youngest son Eagled out because I believe it is that good of a program. Another nice thing about Boy Scouts is there are usually several Troops within a reasonable distance so you can find one that is the best fit. Other than Scouting I know next to nothing about any other non-sports activities for kids. |

My uninformed opinion too. Plus Eagle Scout still holds some weight in the real world. APC has really no social equivalent. |
