I picked up one of your .22 conversion units at the SHOT Show this year along with a couple of BDM magazines. So far this thing is driving me nuts. On my first range trip I tried Remington HV rounds (recommended in the instruction sheet) - not cheap bulk stuff. I managed to get off 4 rounds before the thing completely quit. Round 5 was a failure to fire and that was the way the rest of the session went - nothing else would fire. So I took the thing home, cleaned it, looked it over (no obvious problems), and checked the ammo stash for other likely rounds.
Second trip today - started with CCI Mini Mags. First round from the mag fed, but wouldn't fire. Dropped the mag, worked the charging handle, and the round (which didn't extract) fired on the second attempt. I'd only put 10 rounds in the mag and the rest fired, with good accuracy at 25 yards. Looking up. Next mag, loaded 10 rounds - same thing, first round wouldn't fire on the initial attempt, but fired on the second try and the rest of the mag worked OK until about round 8. Another failure to fire which I finally had to extract from the chamber with a knife. I managed to get a few more rounds off, but it got worse from there. Constant failures to fire, mixed with the occasional round that did fire. So I ditched the CCIs and tried some Federal Automatch. First 5 rounds fired, so I started getting hopeful. No such luck - it ground to a halt again with constant failures to fire and an occasional round that fired. So far in two range trips I've managed to get off less than 50 rounds of three different types of ammo and my fingers are getting sore from prying unfired rounds out of the conversion. Kind of frustrating when I read about the units that guys drop in and they work flawlessly for a 500 round range session. Gun is a RRA with 1/9 barrel and 2 stage trigger. Is the trigger the problem? Have I just not found the right ammo type? The accuracy with the conversion is very acceptable, but I'm getting tired of wasting range time messing with this thing. Any ideas? |

Just wanted to interject that I have thrown about 2 bulk packs of Federal .22 through my conversion kit, and I've only had ONE FTE ... And I attribute that to the ammo... Last trip to the range we were shooting 1" groups at about 10-15 yards (rapid fire) and tearing our targets ragged ... This kit has been nothing but a blast and I keep reccomending it to people left and right...
To the OP, hope you get your issues worked out... Good luck... |

Federal Bulk pack runs through my CMMG kit like shit through a goose.
I tried a brick of Remington Golden bullets. No worky. I haven't tried anything else except Federal Bulk after that. The shape of the bullet and the short driving band of the federal seems to be the trick. Ammo with a longer driving band hangs up as it chambers. The failure to fire issues are usually a round that doesn't seat fully. The firing pin falls and seats the round the rest of the way... instead of whacking the rim. For what it is worth, my CMMG conversion kit has instilled a new level of fun back into shooting for me. Blasting 1k rounds per day without feeling a punch in the wallet is awesome. I switch back over to regular ammo and shoot better, even with the larger boom and the small kick that comes with 5.56. |
| You guys are killing me. I haven't seen a Federal bulk pack in months in NW Florida and bulk .22 wasn't one of the items I'd been stockpiling. Hopefully I'll eventually find some again. CMMG tech support suggested trying the conversion with a lower that has a standard trigger, so that will be my next troubleshooting step - just haven't had a chance to get it back to the range yet. |
