Hi MI. I’ve been in touch with a few folks who’ve already received theirs and it appears the rail is having fitting issues over the bayonet lug some 516 models have. It appears yours prototype images does not include a bayo lug on your 516 which is possibly the reason it may have been overlooked. I suspect many people will have to either return the rail for additional relief cuts or will have to chop off the lug - personally would prefer to maintain the lug, as would most others, I assume |

Personally I can set up a router and jig, likely will be doing the cuts myself. I am too damn excited to get this thing finished and out to the range to fickle over 1/4” of extra aluminum Am highly reconsidering just cutting off that lug. Not like I’ll ever use the damn thing and if we’re changing out our rails for the sake of saving weight, removing that lug should shave off another half oz or so. Overall it’s about a 4oz difference between the factory quad and MI’s so it’ll be about another extra 10% overall weight reduction once it’s all said and done, with the lug removed |

I have a standard length model designed. The extended length was not designed to go over the bayonet lug. This feature of the other guns was not over looked or missed. We do not have time at the moment to run any of the short lengths. Once things slow down I may or may not do a run of them. Troy MI |

Anyone going to chop the bayo lug? Any tips? I have never used a bayo lug for anything. I can't think of any reason I might use it in the future either. I have a 14.5 inch version of the upper. When I ordered mine on the 12th I did not see any mention of the hand guards not fitting models with a bayonet lug.

My 11.5" upper started life as a 14.5" with the bayonet lug. Armed with the knowledge it wont accept a bayonet now anyways, I fired up my trusty compressor, grabbed the die grinder and a couple of cheap harbor freight cutoff wheels and commenced to "gunsmith". No bayonet lug anymore, and the hand guard fits fine now. I just put some cold blue on the exposed metal for now. I'll clean it up and figure out a better refinish option later, but it only took 30 minutes or so. You could probably do it with a hack saw, but it would take a while. |
| Well, both my 14.5 and 10 that still have the factory quad rails also have bayonet lugs. I guess the folks at Midwest didn't realize that a lot of 516's have bayonet lugs, including 14.5 and 16 inch models. My other two 516s have the 13" Lancer rails on them which I like very much. Would have loved for this rail to work on my 10" 516 but it appears that it won't. I suppose I could send my barrel off to my friend John Thomas at Retro Arms Works to have the bayonet lug professionally removed (I don't own a bayonet and can't imagine ever using the bayonet lug on either of these two rifles). But that would be an investment of extra funds that would put the cost of the rail at or greater than the Lancer. That would make no sense at all. Guess this one will be going back to Midwest for a refund. Just sorry that it won't work. |

With this handguard and the Sig upper were about 90% to the Caracal 816 for 50% the price. Any chance for an extended version, something like the MCTAR-20XG2 meets MI-22M? The only current extended handguard available for these is the $350 Lancer carbon fiber, and I LOVE your MCTAR-20XG2 on my 7.62x39 AR, probably my favorite rifle (if I HAD to choose). |

I had my MI 516 handguard milled. Fits like a glove and very easy. Mill out the circled part. Kudos to whoever machined/finished it. I went the opposite route and got rid of the bayo. But yours is much better especially in terms of maintaining the upper’s value for those who care for that. Personally I buy my guns to keep, so no issues here in that department. I’ve been meaning to post pics of mine, should finally have it back tomorrow afternoon according to tracking. |

We have design . It will work perfectly and solve the issue for the bayo guns. I dont have a time frame when we will run them . We are 40 days from a presidential election . Every machine including the three new ones we just put on the floor is running 20 hours a day 6 days a week. Troy MI |
