As someone that owns 14? RIS IIs and no GL/SSC... I NEED a GL/SSC, actually 2. I heard these will be available only as a complete rifle or upper receiver group. Is there any way you could sell just the rail? I have every single part ready to go to roll my own, except the rail itself and would rather not buy a lot of things I don't need. Also, is there any way we can get GL/SSC FSPs as well? Thanks! Attached File Attached File |

The GL/SSC rails were only produced for a very short time (about 2007-08). IIRC, Joe mentioned in one of the videos on DD's YouTube channel that they only made 125. Of those, 100 went to the military, and only 25 to the commercial market (though I believe that some of the GL/SSC rails that have shown up on GunBroker in the past were military contract rails that made their way into civilian hands - or so the sellers claimed). All this to say: Finding one is likely going to be mission impossible, and if you do find it, you're probably going to pay an arm and a leg for it. Your best bet is to buy one of the clones that have been made by cutting down the regular 12.25" M4A1 RIS II (there are a couple of gunsmiths who do those). BTW, I've never, EVER seen the FSP version of the GL/SSC for sale anywhere, even though DD obviously made some (the second pic you posted shows one). That version is even more of a unicorn than the non-FSP version. |

This is all I have found so far https://freedomtrading.com/latest/gl-ssc/ |

EDIT: One thing I note - it looks like DD is only bringing back the non-FSP version of the GL/SSC RIS II? My earlier point that the FSP version is unobtanium seems to remain true. |

Only the RIS II could accept a standard USGI M203 and free float the barrel, but the shorter MK18 variant had no M203 capability. The MK18 was (and still is) commonly used suppressed by SOCOM. So if you wanted a suppressor and the grenade launcher in a shorter config than the 14.5” M4 barrel then you needed the GL/SSC model which was intended only for 12.5” barrels, which were 1” longer than the popular (but less numerous) Colt Commando models distributed in SOCOM units prior to the introduction of the 10.3” CQBR upper. Not everyone was sure the 10.3” would become the dominant shorty (since the 11.5” and 12.5” barrels are technically superior) and the MK18 rail was simply too short to accept the M203. So your shortest length option for the M203 was the GL/SSC at 12.5” but they tested it and it wasn’t widely fielded, so very limited production. Maybe some bean counter said “We’re not buying 3 different models of the RIS II” but I’ve never seen anyone state that as being the reason more weren’t procured, so it could’ve been more about the lack of standardization of the 12.5” barrel length which relegated the GL/SSC into gun nerd obscurity. lol But here’s my question: Since the GL/SSC model had an NSN (well, 2 NSNs) then what happened if SOCOM units tried to order them? Or did they never put in orders for them? |
