I'd like to know if these are LEO marked I don't believe they are. I think Colt is putting the same lower on all the LE and SP models now, with the "M4 CARBINE" and caliber being the standard rollmark for both lines. The difference is the serial number, the first two digits are either LE or SP. |

Consider a gas gun - where the gas comes into the bolt carrier and pushes the bolt against the barrel extension which in turn because of the cam path in the carrier unlocks it and continues to push it to it's full extension as it continues rearward. Now a piston gun - the bolt carrier is pushed rearward by the op rod, and the bolt is unlocked- and it's unlocked by the cam path of the carrier; but it's unlocked not because there is gas inside of the bolt carrier separating the bolt from the carrier... instead it's unlocked because the barrel extension holds it until it has turned sufficiently inside the extension to clear the lugs. Now once it has moved back and cleared the lugs, there is nothing "forcing" the bolt forward - and typically (on a "drop-in" piston converted gas gun for instance) the result of this is significant wear in the upper receiver where the cam pin is free to impact the upper receiver. The HK416 mitigates this somewhat by having a spring inside the bolt and carrier - which in turn caused them to have to make other adjustments such as increasing the buffer spring weight in order to compensate since the spring inside the bolt carrier literally fights the buffer spring's ability to close the bolt. Many other piston guns though just wear this area in the upper receiver out over time until they've given the cam pin just enough space to turn a few degrees prior to closing... so it can start impacting the barrel extension. Fail. |
