1,000 is tough. You get comfortable at 800 and any little nuance will throw you off: too much grip pressure, a little variance in the wind or a bad wind call, mirage, etc., etc. You should feel good you got hits at 1,000! |

Mirage was for sure an issue.
Was still a great day at the range. Wife was making consistant hits at 500 with a .223 rife and we tried out a new super short .22 AR I recently assembled. I've been looking at one of those bullseye camera systems. Would make it a lot easier to see hits way out there. |

Anyway, since it's freezing here in WI, I'm going to start reloading for the 260. I finally got around to getting a Labradar, and have almost everything for reloading. I wanted to sanity check the following, as my different brass is calling for different bushings: - Lapua - I got a 0.294 bushing (measurements called for 0.293-0.294 based on virgin cases measured by neck thickness and ABM loaded rounds measured by neck size) - Pederson - I got a 0.294 bushing (measurements called for 0.293-0.294 based on ABM loaded rounds measured by neck size) - Prime - Planning on ordering 0.287 (measurements called for 0.287-0.288 based once fired cases measured by neck thickness and factory loaded rounds measured by neck size) - Hornady - Still need to measure . . . . I was also going to order 0.290 based on something I remember reading earlier. Does this chime with others experiences? I'm using Redding Competition dies. Thoughts . . . |

What brass are you reloading? I saw a consistent difference between Lapua and Prime brass in terms of neck thickness, which will drive a bushing size difference of 0.294 v 0.287, respectively. I'm not experienced enough to know if this range will make a noticable difference in neck tension when reloading, but I figured I would point it out. |

I followed the recommendation from the Redding catalog for each brand of brass I have. I'm keeping records by brass brand and lot number, with 5-10 sample per lot.
Here is a cut & paste from the Redding catalog on how determine what bushing you need: The easiest way to determine the proper diameter bushing, is to measure the neck diameter of several loaded or dummy cartridges with an accurate micrometer. Subtract .001”–.002” from the average neck diameter and this diameter bushing will generally size case necks to create the proper press fit for the bullet. Another method is to measure the neck thickness with a ball micrometer or our Case Neck Gauge (see page 33). Double the neck wall thickness and add this number to the bullet diameter. The result is the neck diameter of a loaded cartridge, and bushing size can be determined as above. After loading several cases, it’s a good idea to test the neck’s grip on the bullet. The simplest method is to push the bullet in a loaded cartridge against the edge of your reloading bench with moderate hand pressure. The bullet should not move easily in the case neck. If the bullet pushes deeper in the case, select the next smaller bushing and start again. When using your bushing die, we have found that lubricating case necks and installing the bushing numbers down may improve results. Many experienced reloaders like to adjust the die to size 1/2 to 3/4 of the case neck. This has been shown to improve accuracy in most instances. Final note: If you are not sorting case neck wall thickness for uniformity, we do not recommend the use of any bushing style die without a sizing button. |

Went out today with the 260 - only 20 rounds due to not having the right gloves. 18° F so I decided to grab a box of Prime over the Hornady. The gun and scope were dialed in for Hornady. Prime started off nearly an 3/4 inch high at 100 yds. Went out to 200 yds and with no holdover or dialing, it was perfect for a zero (scope is zeroed at 100 yds). Wish I had the LabRadar and a box of Hornady with me to compare the two. I did have a 5 shout group under <1MOA, so overall what I expected out of the gun when I do my part.
For reloading, I measured the neck thickness of 20 spent cartridges of the Hornady (10 samples of two separate lots) and the results came in the same as the Prime. Therefore, I ordered a 0.288, 0.290 and have a 0.294 bushing for neck tension. FYI Brownell's has the equivalent of 10% off at the $200, $400 and $600 spend marks today. |

My dope from the TMKs was dead nuts on and then I verified by shooting a few TMKs. I had a 2/3 e target set at a mile but without a spotter I was unable to connect. I drug out my old .308 and checked it as well. It was still zeroed and my AB dope was correct. All in all a good day. ETA: I do not put targets on the road. I just use the road to access my targets via vehicle. |
