Meanwhile in New Haven. New Haven's mayor once praised Avelo for bringing jobs to New Haven is now is big mad at them for deportation flights. New Haven prohibits use of public funds for travel, promotion, collaboration with Avelo Airlines The city of New Haven is prohibiting the use of public funds for any travel on Avelo Airlines, according to a memorandum sent to city employees on July 25. In addition to prohibiting travel, the city said that no financial resources may be used to promote, market or partner with Avelo Airlines in any capacity. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker (D) released a statement about the decision. New Haven is proudly a welcoming city for all our residents. Avelo Airlines continued participation and profiteering from the Trump Administration’s inhumane and often illegal immigration policies and ICE’s deplorable tactics is antithetical to our values as a city, and not something we will support with city funds or taxpayer dollars. Until Avelo Airlines changes it policies and practices, municipal employees are prohibited from using public funds for any travel on Avelo Airlines or using city resources to promote, market or partner with Avelo Airlines. Travel should be about bringing people together, not tearing families apart. Prior to Avelo’s decision to contract with ICE to charter deportation flights, the City of New Haven had a very strong partnership with Avelo and it’s truly unfortunate that they have chosen this path, and we continue to urge Avelo to reconsider this unethical and misguided business decision. Justin Elicker (D), mayor of New Haven Protests against the Avelo’s deportation flights out of Arizona took place during previous months at New Haven’s Tweed Airport, a major hub for the airline. In July, Avelo announced that it would be shutting down its West Coast operations. Another avenue for Tong to jump in front of the media cameras? Car washes become target of ICE raids in Connecticut There have been several reports that confirm Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been making their way to car washes across the state and taking employees into custody. Ebaa Mohmed with the Muslim Justice Center told News 8 that four workers were taken by ICE at East Street Car Wash and Optimo Car Wash in New Britain on Monday. Monday’s ICE raid was not the first time agents appeared at a local car wash. A Wilbur Cross High School student was picked up at an East Haven car wash on July 21. In June, workers were picked up at D Hand Car Wash in Southington. Maggie Mitchell Salem, the Executive Director of Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, believes people are being detained that do not have criminal records, yet they are being removed because of their nationality. “It is a deliberate policy of creating fear and uncertainty in these communities, and it’s working,” she said. “The impact on employers, on taxes, on everything as simple as receiving a service like car washes. These are services we count on every day and think about who is staffing those services.” In a statement, the city of New Britain said, “ICE does not communicate about their operations with local municipalities.” News 8 reached out to ICE for a comment on these ice raids at car washes, but they did not respond. |

65 undocumented immigrants in Connecticut detained by ICE over a 4-day period Sixty-five undocumented immigrants in Connecticut were detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over a four-day period last week, according to a press release. The apprehensions were targeting transnational organized crime, gangs and egregious sex offenders, according to ICE. Among those detained, 29 individuals had been convicted or charged with crimes in the United States, including kidnapping, assault, drug offenses, weapons violations and sex crimes, ICE said, and others were identified as members of transnational gangs or had criminal histories in their native countries. The operation was named “Operation Broken Trust” and was a collaboration between ICE Boston’s Hartford field office, the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In May, the Connecticut Trust Act, which limits the cooperation of state and local law enforcement agencies with ICE, was expanded, according to the release. “Sanctuary legislation like Connecticut’s Trust Act only endangers the communities it claims to protect,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said. “Such laws only force law enforcement professionals to release criminal alien offenders back into the very communities they have already victimized. The state of Connecticut is a safer place thanks to the hard work and determination of the men and women of ICE and our federal partners. Working together, we were able to arrest 65 illegal aliens in just four days throughout Connecticut, many of whom had significant criminality in the United States.” The press release includes several of those detained by ICE. Officers received reports on Aug. 9 of a person being sexually assaulted while on a trail near Fort Hale Dog Park, located at 408 Townsend Ave. Ludvi Carias-Interiano, 34, was arrested Thursday morning and taken into custody in West Haven, where he was residing. He was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and first-degree unlawful restraint. Lawmakers are questioning the efficacy of the Trust Act after it was revealed that Carias-Interiano had been previously deported. “If the person has a criminal record that lengthy and was already deported twice, I think the conversations over and he needs to be deported and sent back to where he came from,” state Sen. Paul Cicarella (R), who serves on the Public Safety Committee. Republicans cite Connecticut’s Trust Act, which limits cooperation between state and local agencies regarding federal immigration cases. |

Investigators use nationwide DNA database to make arrest in New Haven sexual assault case Investigators used the nationwide database, known as CODIS, to match the DNA of Ludvi Carias-Interiano, 34, to an alleged assault in Plano, Texas. “The state lab was able to identify a DNA profile which was compared with a national database, leading to an unsolved sex assault in Plano Texas,” New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said on Sept. 12. |

Ned Lamont (D-Conn.) announced Monday that his administration is providing $3 million in emergency state funding to Connecticut Foodshare to help residents expected to lose food stamp benefits during the government shutdown. Beginning Nov. 1, no new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be distributed by the federal government, impacting 360,000 Connecticut residents, according to a press release. “They are weaponizing hunger to serve their political priorities,” the attorney general said. This is the state’s 38th lawsuit since January, Tong noted. “At every turn, the SNAP program has been attacked over and over and over again,” Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) said at the press conference. Tong spoke at the Office of the Attorney General in Hartford at noon. |

What a frigging clown show. Democrats when they were in power and had a shutdown, blamed the Republicans. Democrats when not in power STILL blame the Republicans for the shut down because they're not getting what they want. Media, carrying the water for the Democrats are mostly still trying to blame the Republicans for not giving the Democrats what they want. The sheep don't realize this is entirely the fault of the Democrats since Republicans need a few Democrats (something like 7 or 8) to cross the aisle and vote for the CR due to the Cloture Clause (60 votes) and Republicans only hold 53 seats in the Senate. SNAP bennies are being held hostage by Democrats over illegal healthcare and a few other things Democrats want that were stripped from the CR. States could step in, like CT half heartedly did (to the tune of $3 million) but don't want to, they'd rather the feds foot the SNAP bill. States don't want to blow up their budgets having to fund SNAP. |
