The boy and I have decided to do some APC events, and we are going to do some training and practice. I know how to land nav, but I'm rusty. I figure teaching him will refresh my memory and get us out of the house more. Now, I just gotta find a place. I'm in the thumb area, I am looking for public land or any place I could be granted permission to use that has some varied terrain. I just want to go hike around and practice map/compass reading. I know there's a lot of wilderness in the state, but I'd rather not spend hours in the car driving to a place to walk around for a while. If there were a place not too far, that would be great.

Edit: Sorry. Reading is hard. Didn't see that you lived in the Thumb. Just thought you were looking for somewhere up there. *********************** How big an area do you need? We went squirrel hunting at Bald Mountain State Park east of 24 and north of Greenshield. Lots of woods to walk through. Attached File Greenshield is the road just south of Home Depot. Bumping this as I get closer to scheduling an event and will need a place to hike, map read, and meet. I see some good possibilities here, and I'll peruse the facilities and schedules of them. Events *might* include an overnight stay, so places with camping options may be best logistically. Bonus for places that we could shoot at or near, as a lot of the people interested in doing APC stuff would probably like to shoot, too. I think the Lapeer Pit area might be one. The first couple of meets won't be qualifying events, so they won't be published on the website. I'll call them training-up events, just for clarity, but the goal of the group is APC participation and eventual rating. |
