I may be moving to Olive Branch, a surrounding area, or further north into TN (Collierville or German Town) but I was wondering if any of you had any knowledge of the area. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! As an aside, I know I'm from CA but I'd be bringing 4 solid red, pro Trump, pro Shal Not Be Infringed voters into the state.

Mississippi is terrible. Don't move here.  Anywhere you are talking about is fine. It's all more or less the suburbs of Memphis/Shelby county. Each year, the population pushes farther into NW MS or east of Memphis so if you plan to be here a while, you might want to look at how close you are to the city limits. Shelby county is the tax cash cow for the city of Memphis so I don't know how much longer places like Germantown and Collierville can avoid the influence of Memphis politics. If you want acreage, it will be pricey in those areas, but coming from California our property probably looks cheap. Basically all of our news comes from Memphis so if you watch local TV, the first 3 or 4 stories will be about someone getting shot followed by some social justice. The funny thing I've noticed is that we don't hear much about what goes on in the rest of the state other than SEC sports. TV weather is a big thing here too. If there's a severe thunderstorm, then it'll be nonstop weather reporting until it moves out of the area. That isn't all bad because we get some nasty stuff from time to time. Sunday night we had some tornadoes and straight line winds that took out trees and power lines. As far as shooting, there are outdoor ranges to the south in Como and to the North in Lakeland. Some indoor ranges out near I40 east. Depending on what part of CA you are from, the landscape could be a shock. No mountains or beaches here. No rock-filled cool streams. And finally, the summer heat and mosquitos can be a challenge. No it isn't the same as 120 degrees in Phoenix, but 97 degrees with 70% humidity and no wind isn't pleasant. |

Miker84 covered it pretty well. We do have excellent hunting and fishing if you're into that. Gun laws are awesome. Coming from CA it will feel like you hit the lottery. All NFA legal, OC and Permitless Carry, CCW is shall issue with no training requirement but an Enhanced Endorsement is available with 8 hour class (do it!). No mag limits. We should do a MS HTF meet and greet some time. Its been a while. |

If you're looking at a map of Memphis, across the border is DeSoto county. From L-R is Horn Lake extends to I55, then Southaven extends to Malone, then Olive Branch. Basically, all these towns extend south to Church Road. There's a no man's land south of Church Road for a few miles call Nesbit (just kidding on the no man's land- but in my head it feels like a low populated buffer to Memphis). South of Nesbit is Hernando, and to the East of Hernando (South of Olive Branch) is Lewisburg. Once you go south of Hernando, you're in Tate county-- Miker84 land. So, IMO- I wouldn't live anywhere close to Memphis. Horn Lake- no way. Southaven- as far south as I could Olive Branch- same Hernando/Lewisburg- anywhere (it seems the Nesbit "buffer" works OK from keeping the urban blight out) Lewisburg has the best schools in MS, followed closely by Hernando. When I tell my school teacher wife- "Yeah, but it's still in MS", she doesn't think it's that funny. TLDR: I really like it here, stay away from Mempho. |
