Hands down our favorite place to eat in NOLA is a little bitty joint off of Decatur called Fiorella's Cafe... it is a DIVE... but they have some of the best fried chicken I have ever had... they blow away Coop's IMHO.  The Fettuccine Alfredo with the grilled shrimp is also beyond amazing.  Oh, and for an appetizer get the Crawfish Balls!!

Can't wait till June when we get to come down for some amazing food and music!!

I am kinda surprised nobody has mentioned Frenchman's street in this thread. That is where the local's hang and definitely where Mrs. Kyreb and I have had our best times in NOLA. Great bars and live music.

I'm in NOLA every two years for a convention, for dinner it's hard to beat Brennans

For dessert you HAVE to try the Double Chocolate Bread Pudding at Red Fish Grill it's another Ralph Brennan  restaurant and yes it's that good to go there for just the Double Chocolate Bread Pudding!

At the end of Sept, i will be taking my family on the City of New Orleans train from Memphis to New Orleans. I want to stay close to the French Quarter. Can anyone suggest a hotel?

That's kind of liking asking, "What gun should I buy for my first?"  The answer will depend on several variables, like what do you want to do here; what kind of price range? how old are the kids?

The Marriott on Canal is at the western edge of the Quarter and within walking distance of the Aquarium and the Insectarium - if those are things you want for the kids.

On the north side is the Landmark, which is smaller, and I would hope less expensive.  It's about 10 blocks north of Jackson Square, but the street that it is on is under construction, so you might have to deal with noise.

There are several small hotels actually in the Quarter, like the St. Pierre or the Bourbon Orleans or the Monteleone.  The downside to hotels in the Quarter is that the music from various clubs might keep you awake.

Try a Google search, and limit yourself on a map bounded by Canal, Rampart, Esplanade, and the river - the boundaries of the Quarter.  In general these will be on the higher end of the price range.

You can also look slightly east of there for a Downtown or Warehouse District place.  It's a longer walk to the Quarter, but almost all are quite nice - the Hilton Riverside has a great view of the river because it is literally at the riverside.

I hope you enjoy your stay in my city.  I have enjoyed hiking to waterfalls and doing some rafting in your state.

I will arrive tomorrow afternoon, driving. Other than the obvious NOLA sites are there any good gun or knife places that are must see.

Thanks

I wouldn't call it a must see, but in the 300 block of Royal St. in the Quarter there's a neat old shop with lots of antique guns and swords and the like.  Not sure about knife places, but there are no regular gun shops in New Orleans.  We have some stupid laws about gun sales that predate state preemption that make it impractical to have a gun store here, so the shops are all in Metairie, Chalmette, Gretna, etc.  (As an example, if I ran a gun store in the city, anyone who came in to buy a gun would either need a permit from the NOPD firearms section, which no longer exists, a letter from the Superintendent of Police {good luck,} or I would have to notify the Superintendent in writing before allowing you to pick up the gun you wanted to buy, and await his all clear.  This stuff dates from the '30s.)

Though if you go roaming to the westbank, Gretna Gun Works can be fun to visit.  A lot of old guns there you rarely see in the wild, though the prices are not cheap.  Webley automatic revolvers, nice Colt 1903s and 1908s, Steyr auto pistols from the First World War, heck, last time I was there they even had a Gyrojet----the price tag, if I recall correctly, merely said something like "Duh.  It's a Gyrojet.  Ask."

Just got back from a weekend trip- If you are up for a nice dinner or date night I would suggest GW Fins as a great restaurant to go eat. We at there this weekend - It was phenomenal.  Expect to spend $100 or $150-200 if getting drinks but it was well worth it. Great atmosphere and service was exceptional.  Enjoy your trip. We also at at the Burbon house and it was good as well.

A few years old,

But I did a tread about the last time I was in NOLA.
Thought it would be good to add to the master thread.

Looks like an old thread, but  Planning a little trip with a friend to NO. I've never been. Any suggestions on what to do, where to eat and/or where to stay? I'm not a party guy so no dance club nonsense. Good live music is a plus, though.

The wife, myself and my inlaws are in New Orleans now. Right in the French quarter. Where should we eat dinner? Spicy, etc. No fear for us, but the in laws don't do spicy exotic stuff.

ETA:  My hotel suggestions are the St. Pierre and the Andrew Jackson in the Quarter, but without knowing where in particular you plan on staying or what you want to do, I cannot assert that they are the best choice.

Thanks for the suggestion on hotels & other suggestions, we are looking for a hotel with close parking, can't walk very far (broke dick vet) and use a cane with frequent rest stops.

This will be our 1st trip to the area & trying to learn/see the area as well as great places to eat.

The WWII Museum and a ride on the PT boat are bucket list things.

Most hotels have parking or at least valet parking.  My wife and I used to stay at Prince Conti regularly until a friend offered us her condo when we needed it.  Call them to make sure they are open.  I have walked by there many times in the last few weeks and it did look open but that could be just the restaurant.  Some hotels are waiting to re-open when business starts trending up.  Bar business is starting to get close to where it was.  I usually hang out a Fat Catz on Fri or Sat since I'm friends with the band but Famous Door has great music as well.  Same for Krazy Korner.  All 3 are run by the same company so beer/drinks cost the same.  B-Macs (on St. Louis about 1/2 block from Bourbon) has inexpensive drinks, great bartenders and it feels like a neighborhood bar.

Thanks, will call and talk to Prince Conti, the places I've talked to have either limited 1st come 1st serve parking or insanely expensive parking & I can't see staying someplace 3 nights and paying more for parking than a night at the hotel. Some of the hotels we called are still closed, wondering how the restaurants are doing, one of the reasons to hit NOLA is for the food as well as jazz bars......

Starting to look further out at the chain hotels thanks to the lack of parking and reasonable prices, found 1 hotel with the cheap rooms at $230 a night & they had valet parking for $48 a night, not counting tips and taxes......Not to mention we are driving a new F150 & not a fan of valet parking (just don't trust them)

Had no idea NOLA was so expensive in the middle of July But then again, I hate paying $200 for a hotel room when we might spend 8-10 hours in it a day max

From the looks of things, we will get into NOLA on a Sunday and stay 2-3 nights, not sure where to go after that, going west & not sure if we want to go up to Baton Rouge or dip south  and end up i Lafayette & then go up to Shreveport, or jump on 90 and go into Teas

Just got back from our trip for my wife's conference.

These are my tips as a NO newbie.

#1 Parking is expensive. My wife's conference was at the Hilton so they/we stayed there. Parking was $44/day. But the Harrah's Casino is right across the street and Caesar's Rewards members park for free (self parking). I only had to go in the casino to sign up for Caesar's Rewards (it's free to sign up), then no need to go back because there was a machine to print a parking voucher located on the 1st floor of the parking garage.

#2 WWII museum. If you want the entire experience including looking at artifacts and reading descriptions and stuff 1 day is NOT enough. I arrived before they opened and was ushered out right as they closed. I had to skip reading a lot and I felt pressured to whole day to hurry through. Also, I didn't see any mention of no weapons on their site so I was carrying. Imagine my surprise when there were metal detectors inside the entrance. I had walked (20 minute walk) and didn't want to go back to the hotel and lose 40 minutes of my time so I went in anyways hoping they were just for show. Nope, not for show. It beeped, the guy waved me over to a table where I was asked to remove everything from my pockets, "Doh, my pocket knife." I showed it to the gentlemen and asked if it was prohibited. He said, "That's what it was, just keep it all the way in your pocket where it's not visible." Then he waved me on in.

#3 Food, several of the places mentioned in this thread were closed or limited seating so we didn't get to go to them. We just walked until we found a place that sounded good. I don't think I was disappointed in any of the food but there was some that could have been better for the price. Everything is expensive in NO, don't expect cheap food. If you see cheap food on a menu it's probably because it doesn't come with sides and the sides are expensive.
