On my grandmother's computer in Tennessee right now. Kids messing around with the computer seems to have contracted some type of adware that turns text in the browser into links and roll-over pop-up ads. Can anyone direct me to something I can use to remove all this crap? I'd normally just google everything but the system here is too slow for me to sit around sifting through what's real and what's fake right now...and while I'm up here I'd rather be doing more important things like the garage door and the kitchen disposal. Thanks. |

AVG free would be my recommendation. Adaware is also a good program. That or Malware Bites, IIRC. +1 on Malware Bytes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ |
| be VERY careful on some of the "anti" malware applications. MOST of them are fakes which serve no purpose other than to further infect your system. Malware Bytes we have used numerous times in the past in my company with great results. Can't speak for too many others (although Ad-Aware is another legit one that I haven't used in a long time). |

Alot of the malware/trojans that are out there now not only disable your antivirus but they will not allow you to install anti-malware software such as malware bytes, adaware, etc. You need to start your computer in safe mode Restart the computer and keep hitting the F8 key before Windows loads, this will bring you into a menu that will allow you to boot Windows in safe mode. Do that then install then anti-malware and run the scan. Assuming you have a legit non pirated version of Windows the best free antivirus and anti-malware software is Microsoft Security Essentials. Way better than Avast! or Nod32, etc. MSE uses very little resources. |

I have used AVG and it kinda misses alot of whats out there that needs to be caught by Virus software.
Use Avira antivirus Avira Spybot Search & Destroy by Microsoft Spybot S&D Malware bites is good to Malware Bytes with those three your pretty much covered and its all free |

Quoted: I did this for 8 years. go to here and get Malware Bytes. Then go here and get Avast Free, Avast is better than AVG. Let Avast install and update and then let it run a boot time scan. If you have any issues PM me and ill try to walk you through on the phone. Yeah, I use both of those and I also use immunet and spybot on my home computer. Great minds think alike *high five* Found out my dad had already put malware bytes and spybot on this one, of course no one had been running the scans or updating. And the computer was never bad enough to need the ol' safe mode procedure. All is well, thanks. |

I notice a distinct lack of ComboFix in this thread.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix It's not intended for the non-technical user, but it's serious business. It's cleared out stuff for me that MalwareBytes and SpyBot wouldn't touch. I also use HijackThis a good bit, and http://www.hijackthis.de for logfile analysis. |

I usually dont even give those as options to novices, to much potential to accidentally break things. |
