I started a thread a while back asking for recommendations for a local engraver so I didn't have to send my duty rifle off to get the required tax stamp engravings. I originally asked for Omaha area shops, but soon there were responses for Lincoln and Kansas City. The thread went dormant and is now in the archives. My paperwork is pending, so I went back to the thread to see about getting the markings out of the way. The one recommendation with an actual business name said I'd have to leave my receiver at the shop for a week. Now, I'm posing the question again in hopes of finding a better option. I'll include the responses from the previous thread so maybe we can keep it active and have information for everyone in the NE & KS Hometown forum. Wombat_SCSO [Team Member] 2/8/2010 5:18:58 AM CDT I am sending off Form 1s for an SBR. I know Orion Arms is the recommended place to send items to be engraved, but this is my duty rifle and I'd rather not be without it during their four week turnaround time. Does anyone know a respectable place reasonably close to the Omaha area where I could walk in and out of, or, at the longest, leave the item overnight? MFS1589 [Team Member] 2/8/2010 5:30:34 AM CDT There is a engraver/award/trophy shop on 84th St in LaVista, just south of L St. That can do it. Walk in, Walk out, $15, nice guy. I forget the store name right now. This would be perfect if there was just a bit more detail! Code_4 [Team Member] 2/8/2010 9:34:27 AM CDT Use Herman Engraving in Omaha: LINK TO PHONE/ADDY They will do it while you wait. My last one took about 30 mins for them to get it done. Great guys and they do a very nice job. Let me know how it goes and what you think of them. This is who I called. The guy who answered said I'd have to leave it for a week and it would cost about $40 or $50. And for others in the region: SA_Cornhusker [Member] 2/18/2010 3:17:49 PM CDT I would think Awards Unlimited on O street in Lincoln. I think it is around 15th and O. South side of the street, but they may have moved since I list lived there. KBONSS [Member] 2/19/2010 1:03:07 AM CDT These guys did my AR15 and my Mp5 and my MP5K SBR engraving it looks good. I think it was 20 or 25 dollars it was well worth it. Web site down i think but the phone no. works. http://acculaserengraving.com/ Accu Laser Engraving inc. 1813 SW Market St # 2Lees Summit, MO 64082-2319(Kansas City, MO-KS Metro Area) (816) 246-1801 |

+1 for this:
http://www.acculaserengraving.com/ Shawn at Accu Laser Engraving inc. 1813 SW Market St # 2 Lees Summit, MO 64082-2319 (Kansas City, MO-KS Metro Area) (816) 246-1801 Shawn has engraved 4 for me and no less than 40-50 various guns for the MO hometown crew. He is highly recommended!! Another thing to think about, is that you need to get it done before your F1 gets approved. If you get your Form1 approved 1st, you will not be able to just "leave it" w/someone.... scottMO |

Well, I decided to stop by Herman Engraving today. Like the poster above said, I shouldn't leave an NFA item with an third party. Since I have to be within weeks of being approved, I needed to get this out of the way. I didn't mention I had called before hoping to get a better quote showing up in person. The guy there looked as if he had never seen an AR-15 receiver before, despite Code_4 making it sound like he's used them in the past. When he saw the "Government/Law Enforcement Use Only" stamp on the side, he seemed even more perplexed. I told him I was a deputy and had purchased it before the ban expired. He said, "Oh, so now nobody can own them?" I told him they used to be restricted based on certain features like collapsible stock, etc. and the ban EXPIRED so now anyone can get one. He still tried to tell me it would take a week (to engrave 26 characters into aluminum?). I asked if he could get it done sooner and he knocked it down to "the end of the week" (which is damn near a whole week anyway...) Looks like I'll be without my long gun when I go back to work Thursday night. Fortunately any other SBR's I do in the future won't be time-sensitive like this one, so I can send it off. That is unless we get a good response on this thread for a reliable, quick, and affordable shop locally. |

I know there is several guys that work there and I do not remember who helped me. I sat and waited about 30 mins and he did it while I waited. I called and set up the appointment the week before. He did a great job and charged me 30.00 to do it. I was not blowing smoke up ur ass. The person that did mine was a taller gentleman with longer dark hair if I remember correctly. I would say mid 40's. Anyway, I was just trying to help you out and I am sorry that you had a different experience than I did. |

I didn't mean to make it sound like you were lying. I was a little surprised and more disappointed that my experience was so different. Just chalk it up to the fun of this time through the NFA wringer. In the timeline thread, there was a guy who sent off his forms the same day I did, and he's had his back for almost 2 weeks. He mentioned this was his first stamp; and I got my hopes up thinking maybe if you've been through the checks before, it would go a little faster. By all sane assumptions (I know that rarely if ever applies to the Federal government), they should only have to check you out from the time your last stamp was approved until the present. |
| I stopped by and the guys name is Larry at Hermans. I refreshed his memory about doing mine. I also reminded him that people will need it done the same way and while you wait. Remember that most guys do not understand Class 3 stuff so explain in detail and review exactly what you need done. For anyone who wants to use them I suggest you call him, explain what you need done and setup a time to take it to him. . It took a little while for him to have time to do mine. Like a week or so. |
