I saw they have a range with steel out to 1500y and joined on a whim. There's a gazillion miles of land to shoot in Utah and Az but setting up steel targets out to 1500 on public land seems daunting. I went down today for mandatory orientation. I found out they have over 4000 members and have closed new memberships until attrition lowers the numbers. It looks like a cool range with a ton of different bays, but I'm afraid it's going to be more packed than Costco. The orientation class had a significant amount of "younger" shooters than most ranges, although the people running the range looked like the usual 70-80+ guys, but they seemed nice. I parked next to a lotus that was parked next to a Ferrari, not sure I've seen that before. I left at 7 and it was a solid two hours, I know you guys will say it doesn't take that long. Saw Nevada speed patrol cops, seems like I've seen more of that lately. I came right back since I ended up having stuff to do at home. Four hours of driving and two hours in a classroom was pretty tedious. I'm not sure about this. Getting into the range looks like trying to enter a military base with two lines of cars and range officers checking ID. |

It was paradise 20 years ago. They sent you the gate lock combo in the mail every month...no caliber restrictions (I heard they banned .50 or tried to) and it was 24/7. There weren't RSOs except for a guy named Pete who was certifiably nuts and another guy who would roam around on ATVs and lived on the property in shipping containers. I bought my Honda generator just so we could shoot at night there.... |

What range is 1500 yards there? We mostly used #6 but i think that is like 600 yards. Other than that we used the handgun bays to the left...I believe that was range 1 or 2. I think i remember a friend telling me over a decade ago they were building a range for long range....he said that was where the .50 guys were to shoot if they didn't ban the caliber. In like 2006 or so I set up my AR50 at range 6 in the middle of a weekday afternoon...there was like 8 or so old guys shooting off small caliber bolt action rifles....on my first round they all flipped the fuck out screaming and yelling at me. I guess they didn't like the sound of it going off under that tin roof. I simply explained it was a bolt action rifle like what they had except a little more masculine and they all packed up and went off all the while telling me they would get .50s banned. Fuuds...... |

Welcome! I love Desert Sportsmans. I've been a member for 17 years, but used to go with friends in the 90's. They had the gate code and you really felt as though you were on your own. Yeah, that was nice. Since then, a number of ranges have been added, more shade put up, and pavement. Range #9, the prominently elevated range, has had the berms extended to maybe 700 yds, lots more steel and steel is ran up the mountain to at least 1500 yds. Multiple ranges also have plate racks and shooting trees. They have substantially improved that place. There are more RSO's than in the past, but I have had very few issues. |

Usually pretty open after 12. I’ve never had a problem finding an open pistol bay. I run the CMP match every first Saturday of the month. |

8 year member checking in, I also only go during weekdays. Staffthey have now seem solid but I they have had some real jackwagons. The archery range could be made really nice? It was a challenge to get straw backstops. I think me and another 2 guys shoot bow so we always have that to ourselves. I’m right down the street if you want to shoot sometimes. Every member I have met so far have been really good guys. Irish |

I have been a member there for 3 1/2 years. Never seen 2 lines of cars or any real wait to get in, worst I have seem is maybe 3 cars ahead of me waiting to check in. Weekends can be somewhat busy, might not get one of the smaller rifle ranges to yourself, but there is always room somewhere. When shooting shorter distances, there is almost always something open on #2 or #10. I am glad they suspended the open membership and I have no problem w the RSO driving around making sure nobody is doing anything stupid. |

I just got on the waitlist to join sportsmans. Hopefully, they reopen memberships soon. For 45 years I have done all my shooting on public land. However, now all of the places that I have enjoyed for so long are now total shitholes with garbage, big screen TVs, and other miscellaneous appliances scattered about. Tom |

My understanding is DSRPC reached their member limit and will just be filling in spots as members leave. I suspect spots will open up as some of the folks who joined recently will drop out for various reasons. Kind of like how folks join a gym and discover they just can’t commit. |
I started the membership at DSRPC a bit over 3 years ago and it has been decent. Yes, there are quite a few RSOs driving around checking up on target types and placements but they all have been pretty cool about everything. Best part about this club are the provided range steel and I've never had to wait for a berm (weekdays are best but weekends after the morning rush are okay too). Oh when it is hotter than hell outside, you can get a berm really easy LOL
